Do you mean Kindergarten or Kinder as in preschool?
In NSW kids start Kindergarten if they turn 5 before july 31st of that year.
Kids usually start Kinder/preschool from three years.

Hi Orlandosmum,
Well in QLD they start kindergarten at 3-4 then go to preschool at 4-5 depending on when they were born. So i'm not to sure. Mikayla turns 3 in Nov, so i suppose it would be Kinder/preschool. I think i might have to ring the council and find out.

Hi Mummyof2,
If your little ones three then you'd probably looking for a preschool as kindergarten is the first year of primary school
It's funny though that kids in QLD start so early I've never really thought about that beforeIf you check out your local council website they will probably have all info on local preschools and such.

From what I've worked out from the research I've done, the cut off date is 31st July, so although they technically start school at 5 (1st year being kindergarten but a compulsory year) some are 4 though a lot of parents with the youngest children hold off another year.
They can attend preschool from 3, though a lot don't until they are 4 (or the year before they start school).
From what I found most of the preschools had long waiting lists, we waitlisted dd1 at 3 in Feb of this year to start next Jan when we arrive and 2 said she may get a place, one thought probably not, and the other were lovely and after a begging email for info the lovely lady spoke to the directors and confirmed her place.
Most prioritise for those starting school the next year but do know my step-mum spoke to one that prioritised for 3 year olds (guess so they could get the extra years fees without more paperwork).

PS A good site for finding preschools is http://www.careforkids.com.au

dd2 homebirth 13/10/03 (UK)
dd3 homebirth 8/3/07 (Sydney)
Thanks for that Zan, i will have a look at the website, and contact someone to try and put her on the waiting list.

If you are looking for a really good pre-school in your area then Bomaderry Community pre-school is excellent (cnr Coomea and Birrilley Sts). This is the one that my daughter goes to and my son will be starting at next year. It is purely a pre-school with no long daycare function ... the kids can start at age 2 (limited places) and they will take them when they are still in nappies. This was a big thing for me as several of the pre-schools wont! The hours are 9am till 3pm with facilities to drop off as early as 8:30am and pickup until 3:30pm.
