Thanks Pisces11 and Shy1 for that info - very helpful. i will definitely ask for the BT as a first step.

I spoke to the FN's at my IVF clinic about the MTHFR test and they spoke to my FS who apprently scoffed at the idea of its value - he can be quite opinionated. Anyway no doubt when I see him next I will find out more about his thoughts!

    Default We've both got MTHFR!!

    Hi all,

We have just had test results come back for DP, and found that he is also a positive result for MTHFR gene mutation, same as me....

My brief conversation with FS today didn't give much. He says not all Dr's believe that it's significant, and he doesn't normally test for it in males at all. Just take mega folate and carry on was basically the gist of it. However, the Naturopath (who requested the test for DP), reckons that if we both were positive, then it would make conceiving all the harder....

So, does anyone out there have any info about the ramifications of both of us having MTHFR, and still conceiving successfully? Anyone else done it? We will obviously be having further discussions with both FS and Naturopath, but like to get all the info I can first, and have found it quite difficult to find so far....

    Thanks very much in advance.....

Hi Northcoastgirl, sorry to hear your news. My m/c specialist says it does make things that little bit harder but not impossible. When I tested +ve for MTHFR, she also tested DH who came back -ve. She said if we had both tested +ve, she would have put us both on Megafolate, and MegaB everyday. Becuase it is just me, I take it every 2nd day, DH only takes menevit, CoenzymeQ10, fish oil and zinc. If your DH isn't already on these supplements, I would recommend it, everything helps. Did you both test heterozygous or homozygous to MTHFR?

    Thanks Shy1,

Yes he has tested homozygous the same as me...and he is taking all the supplements but just about to start CoQ10, that will be a new one for him. Your'e right, it all helps surely. Half the stuff were taking were not even sure what it's for, but are sticking with it none the less....

If anyone else has some info or personal stories I would love to hear them....thanks.

I also found a forum on MTHFR...

    http://mthfr.proboards.com/index.cgi

It has some more detailed information and gives a few more specifics based on the exact results of your MTHFR test. Some info is a bit full on ie. scientific.

I just received in the mail my metabolised folate so can finally start taking it!

Lets hope it makes the difference, good luck

Default 2nd bfn and just found out I have both mthfr mutations

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone has had a successful pregnancy with ivf after discovering the mthfr mutations. I'm devastated after my 2ns failed Stim cycle and then straight after getting the mthfr diagnosis. Reading all the stuff about disabilities I wonder if I should bother keeping trying. I have 2 frozen embryos but scared to try again now. Advice or support much appreciated.

Sorry to barge in on IVF thread but I had two miscarriages then two babies. I didn't know I had this gene until this year when I went to a naturopath for bloods for my thyroid. Just wanted to share some positive news and not to give up xx

Thanks for the positive news. It's hard to be positive when you just keep getting reasons it's not working.

@Caesardust Yes I had a successful pregnancy after being diagnosed and she's almost 4 now. I understand how you are feeling but please don't give up & please don't rely on Dr Google for answers.

I'm aware of quite a few people who have had successful pregnancies (or 2) after diagnosis.

It is hard to get your head around especially on top of all the IVF but you are in a better position now than previously as you are aware of the condition. I was placed on Megafol & Mega B to assist in counteracting the effects of MTHFR and for me, it was worth it.

All the best in making up your mind on the way forward and if you do transfer again, I wish you the best of luck to get a sticky BFP

Thanks for your response. Just saw the naturopath who has given me a host of different vitamins now and also got a second opinion from a different fs who thinks I should have some tests for endometriosis. So at least now I have a plan to move forward and feel a little better prepared. It's scary but I want to be a mum so much I'm willing to keep going for now. Fingers crossed!
