    Question Climate Change

My DP and I have had an argument with his mother on climate change. I believe in it and it genuinely worries me but she swears black and blue that it is world wide government led propaganda aimed at making money for the governments involved.

    So the question is...

Do you believe in Climate Change??

By climate change I mean the rapid acceleration of polar ice caps melting in direct relation to depletion of ozone. I understand that it is normal for the world to go through climate changes.

yeah, I believe its changing, but its all to do with nature itself, and the stars, the way the planets align with the sun, its nothing us humans can do to prevent, or change, its just nature. Earth has had ice age before, there was no humans about interfering with the earth then, its just earths natural thing that it does.

CJJHRA - I've never looked into how the stars and planets align and how it affects the world.

I know a few people who are skeptics... I am currently a little agnostic with some of it but still think being green is a good thing.

It was interesting to read that the polar ice caps increased in 2008 instead of decreasing despite constantly being told the polar ice caps are melting I guess that didn't sell papers enough for everyone to know

No need to believe I observe it daily in my local and surrounding area and its' effects on nature. The internet and news media provide us with many examples as well on a global basis. We need to figure out why this is happening and what if anything can we do to fix this.

I'm glad others out there are thinking about climate change too.
Lately I have had numerous conversations with different people on climate change and found that there are very few people who believe it is a threat and just wanted to see if we were alone in our fears.

How people could fail to acknowledge the impact industrialisation has had on our planet astounds me. I mean really, what on earth are they thinking? My mother in law is the same as yours and I can not stand her. You can not eat krispy cremes, kfc, and drink 5 bottles of vodka every single day without being extremely overweight, and have severe alcohol related implications...same deal with the climate change issue. You can not pump noxious gases into the atmosphere, mine the planet of all its resouces and pollute our waterways, kill all of a planets important habitats without it effecting a heathy environment. Some people really need to get a clue
You've got to say, I think that if I keep working at this and want it badly enough I can have it. It's called perseverance. Lee Iacocca

Absolutely, and the form of climate change we are currently facing is global warming.

What you need to realise is that there are many people out there who stand to lose a lot if strict climate change legislation were to be passed. These people have formed skeptics groups which make and distribute all kinds of sophisticated (looking) propaganda trying to undermine the public's belief in, and fear of climate change. There is a consensus among scientists that human caused climate change is happening, but as with every scientific consensus, there are a few individual scientists who disagree. Skeptics leap on the statements of these individuals as "proof" human caused CC isn't real, ignoring the overwhelming agreement among the rest of the world's scientists.

    From wiki:

Since 2007, no scientific body of national or international standing has maintained a dissenting opinion. Some organisations hold non-committal position.
These same skeptics seize on other climate effects to disprove global warming. For instance, parts of Europe are experiencing extreme winter weather atm. However, this is all part of global warming, which actually alters ocean currents, these help distribute warm air and effect climate dramatically.

Just a quick correction. Climate change isn't caused by depletion of ozone (which has actually been markedly improved by legislation regulating the use of certain products, such as CFCs). CC is caused by the increase of carbon (and other substances) in the atmosphere, primarily caused by human activity (buring oil, land clearing, livestock farming etc). The carbon builds, causing the atmosphere to become denser, which prevents the escape of heat.
