Advice for what to do in brisbane!

Hi all!

My partner and I have made the big decision and want to have a baby. We are really excited and just a little bit lost too. After reading a few of the older post saw that the qfg may be able to help us out..... does anyone have any other places to go that do IUI. (that is what we are hoping to do!) Or doctors that are same sex family friendly in the brisbane area.

Also while I am here....... we were thinking... yes I know this is going a little to far ahead..... At present in QLD only the birth mothers name can go on the birth cert. BUT in NSW this is not the case, has anyone heard of mums going down to a hospital across the boader of nsw to give birth? It would only be an hour drive and we having a Ceaser. Would the Birth Cert still be legal in Qld? Just a thought would be great to hear some veiws and advice from anyone who could help!!

hey there,
I am in SA so can't helpwith the whole QFG thingo, but as far as travelling for the birth certificate, this is something I have considered too. I think if you are planning a C-Section then there should be no problem with travelling to NSW, providing you can find a hospital that isn't under so much pressure that theyy have 'catchment areas'

Thanks Nurse27...... after reading Katianas thread last night, we were nearly in tears reading what she has been through...... we are just going to concentrate on getting pregnant first! Then think about the next step! We are just getting giddy with all the excitement!

We rang the Qfg (queensland fertility group) a few days ago and explained our situation and they were very helpful and gave us some numbers to call and told us the steps involved. We were so happy to get things rolling...... we started calling the obs number to make appointments and they are all on holidays!!! Arrrr

We are hoping that one of them is back tomorrow so we can get things going! It is awful just waiting..... We haven't even started yet and I am getting impatient! Imagaine the 2ww!! How does anyone go about day to day life waiting to know..... I dont think I wld be able to keep my mind on work etc etc look there I go again jumping the gun.... first things first..... Doctors appointment. Fingers crossed by tomorrw We will have our first appiontment to look forward 2!!

Well we called up the Dr and the next appointment we could get is not until march!! Is this normal for such a wait? It just seems so far away..... we decided to wait until the holiday period is over and try our luck then. How long did it take for other people to get seen by a Dr, and then how long from then to the acctual first try?

It can take ages to get into the fertility docs, and people doing IVF have gone kind of crazy in trying to squeeze cycles in before the end of last year, meaning that everything else would have been pushed back to the start of this year.

We saw the GP in August 08, the FS on Nov 08, and have yet to have a cycle due to a series of complications. I have had 3 operations, during the first one, they did a uterine biopsy which indicated a pre-cancerous growth. They failed to tell us that until our 7 week post op appointment - which we had previously been told would be our start date for our first cycle - so needless to say we were devo at this.

We are due to see the FS tomorrow to find out if the treatment I have had has worked in destroying the pre cancer or if not what we need to do next.

So having a wait of a couple of months seems to be the norm. The stuff to do during this time is to chart your cycle so you can get an idea of when ovulation happens - so that you can go into the docs well prepared.

How did the FS go? I hope all went well! We have got an appiontment in feb...better than march!! I have started charting like you said so I have some info to show if need be.

Hey PinkGirls, did you end up finding out any more info about the birth certificate issue? My partner and I are thinking about doing the same thing. We live in Ormeau, so the Tweed Hospital is only 45mins drive (probably closer than the nearest Brisbane hospital). It seems ridiculous that we have to do this just so that both parents can be recognised!

Hi, unfortunatly we haven't looked into it any further. We have decided to get pregnant first!! Still waiting to see the FS. See him next week! Might ask him if he knows how to go about looking into it.....i'm not sure where to start! Maybe because you live closer to the boarder you could be able to go through in the midwives program (if they do it) at the tweed hospital. You could contact the hospital and see if you could go there. It wld just mean that you have to drive there each month to see the midwives at the hospital and then towards the end every 2 weeks.... just a thought!
Isnt it silly that a few kms is the difference between being on the birth cert or not!!
Does anyone know if the laws are in review for Qld??

I am born and bred in QLD and live here still and I have put my childrens fathers on their birth cert.

Hi Pinkgirls,

My partner and I spent a lot of time with QFG and found them so helpful, warm, welcoming and most importantly non judgemental. I feel they are the best for helping les mums in bris. Unfortunantly, we found the whole process quite expensive (although QFG has the most reasonable prices in bris/qld I found.)
We are now going with a known donor, and are about to start TTC. He's had all his tests, and we've signed a donor agreement, declaring rights, responsibilities etc.
Current the QLD laws are not under review for birth certs. However, you can get various documentation drawn up for the coparent providing them with legal rights and responsibilities etc, like picking kids up from school, taking to a dr etc. KRudd also changed some laws last year, stating that those children concieved through artificial insem, will have the coparent legally recognised should anything happen to the biological mum. Also, make sure you have private health insurance at least 3 months prior to falling pregnant.
