Default Could this be chicken pox?

DS (3.5) has got little spots in random places all over his body- both ears, face, neck, shoulders, legs but not his tummy. I noticed a couple of them yesterday and thought they were just mozzie bites but today there are a LOT more (though he's not COVERED in them). They aren't scab-looking, more like little bites but not really bites iykwim... do you think this could be chicken pox? He was immunised at 18 months so I didn't think he would get them?

If it is chicken pox, should I be worried about DD (11 months) and the bub-to-be as well?

Do they have pus filled centres?

It is hard to tell without seeing them. Maybe do a google image search and play match the spot Are they itchy? CP spots do look a little like mozzie bites but they generally appear on the tummy first.

My kids have had several viral rashes so it could just be something like that.

I wouldn't worry too much about your DD, if she gets them she will be fine. One of ours had them at 7 weeks old and was totally fine.

I think CP is mainly a worry in pregnancy if you are in the third trimester.

Chickenpox usually starts as blisters on the trunk, not really spots, and they appear in clusters.

There are lots of random viruses that cause rashes and most are just treated for their symptoms (i.e. headache, fever etc can be treated) without needing anything more.

It could be. DS got the same thing when he was about 12 months old. Came out like the beginnings of CP. But the dr said it was a virus and that he'd seen about 10 kids in the last few days with the same symptoms. Sure enough it was gone in a few days.

Have you had the CP vax? Your youngest is too young for the vax anyway. Really there's nothing you can do - CP is actually the most contagious before the spots even appear, so if it is CP the family has already been exposed. Your 11 month old should be fine. Of course it's not nice to have, but it's usually milder when they are young.

As for you, I'd make a drs appointment and see what they say.

    Thanks for the replies.

Exactly a week ago he had vomitting and a fever which apparently can happen a week before spots start... BUT we've also all had the gastro bug this week so who knows, it could have been that.

Nope they aren't pussy at all, but I did google it and they look a bit like some I saw. I did think the same thing about them usually starting on the stomach which makes me think it might not be CP as he has none on his stomach at all. I don't think they are itchy as he hasn't complained about them, but they do look uncomfortable, esp the ones on his ears which have made his ears swollen and red.

I don't think I've been immunised but I had it as a kid.

One of the nurses at my work said that unless they come out as blisters then they prob aren't CP so I will see what they look like tomorrow. Can't really see a Dr tomorrow as we are travelling to Bris and back for my 20 week scan so will have to try to get him in on Wednesday I guess.... not that I think the Dr will be able to do anything??

DOctors very rarely treat minor rashes if there are no other symptoms. Most cases the only thing that happens from going to the doc for a rash is that you expose other people (especially babies and older people with low immune systems) to the virus.

I am not sure what they look like on kids lol. I got them when I was 18, they started along forehead on my hairline and I though they were pimples so I was popping them in the morning

I went to the beach with some girlfriends and as I am well known to be a panicky person when it is not warranted they didn't think it was anything to be worried about. Well when I took my top off I notice some on my belly and freaked lol.

I made them leave the beach with me and went straight to the chemist near my place, they said to get them checked, couldn't get into the dr so went to the emergency room (yes I am a hypochondriac ). I was taken into triage and three drs came in and I freaked, then they told me it was chicken pox The next day I was covered from head to toe in itchy pussy spots

Sorry to on about my own story lol I suppose the point I was trying to make was that from when I noticed the little spots to when I was covered and itchy was only 24 hrs.... There I finally made my point
