    Default conjunctivitis in babies-help!

my 8mth old has just been told he has bacterial conjunctivitis in both his eyes

he has got some drops, have to put them in every 2hrs, which is proving to be a feat in itself..

anyone have any experience with this and could offer some advice?

how long will he be all red-eyed pussey etc?

are there any other natural remedies to use to speed up the healing process? i thought maybe booby juice?

and any tips on how to get 2 drops in each eye? dont have anyone to help me do it.

    thankyou!!

    very much YES, YES, YES
breast milk is fantastic for it, personally i have never been able to do it but if i were a breast feeder when DD2 got it BM would have been my preferred choice of a remedy.

to put drops in DD2s eyes i would sit on the floor with my legs straight out and far enough apart so she just fit in between (so her on the floor between my legs snugly). this way she had less room to move her head about.

my twins suffered with this and still do from time to time - they picked it up when they started daycare - and as soon as one got it so did the other - one thing that worked well for me - there are some wipes u can buy called little eyes I think - by the same people that do little nose stuff - they are wipes in a foil packet - they are very gentle and I used them to wipe away the crud etc - sorry its not very nice is it - but they really worked for us and seemed to help a lot - they are quite pricey but well worth it

I second those "Little Eyes" eye wipes. DS has had a blocked tear duct since birth and we use those wipes all the time. They are expensive but worth it!

I just got some drops for him recently. The pharmacist advised that as long as you got at least one drop into the eye, you were doing well. I lie DS on his back and get him to look up at me.

thanks so much for the replies!!

i saw those littlefess wipes for eyes today, ill go grab a pack tomorrow. have been using cotton wool balls with saline wash to wipe the gunk out, then doing the drops every 2 hrs. its so hard cause he is such a wiggle pot (8.5mths old) and squirms away each time i try to drop them in his eyes.

i will soak some cotton wool balls in boobyjuice, and also give a wipe with that too!

soren-thanksfor the tip about putting bub between your legs, im gonna try that one next!!

    thanks again!

Those wipes are great - having just had to use them on me..... and kids and husband.... sigh.

Are you using drops from the chemist or the doctor? The ones I got from the doc you had to use every 4 hours (began with a c) and were much more effective than the chemist ones.

Dh got told a tip for putting in eye drops for little kids. Just squeeze a drop in the corner of the closed eye, and when they open their eye it naturally runs into the eye. No need to hold their eyes open.

DS got it at about a month old and I just applied saline at about 5 bucks for a big bottle. It is sterile and the conjunctivitis was gone in about 2 days.

my 8 mth old had it last week and I only treated it with booby juice. I found squirting it straight in worked well as he would give his eyes a good rub afterwards which helped get it in. His has all cleared up.

    thanks everyone!

soren- i tried the laying down in between my legs thing, it worked a treat! he couldnt squirm anywhere

delirium- thanks thats a great tip too! will try with the next dose!

amanda- yeah i got prescribed some drops..they start with a c...um chlorsig! (god took me ages to remember the name!!) I have to give 2 drops in each eye every 2 hours.

myfab4- boobyjuice is awesome healing stuff isnt it?! i expressed into a little container so that i can dip the cotton wool ball in (not double dipping) and then wipe across his eyes! Glad your little one is better now!

im amping up the hygiene too, so hopefully we all dont get it! have been using only cotton wool buds on his eyes (not facewashers) and washing my hands thouroughly with dettol wash after each time, as well as trying to keep his hands clean too, cause he loves touching my face atm!

    thankyou for all the replies!
