Unhappy Bub wanting to sleep on her belly

    Hi Everyone,

My DD lately has been wanting to sleep on her belly.
When we put her to bed of a day or night we'll come in and check on her in 15 mins and there she is on her belly sound asleep. I dont know how she gets on her belly as we have one of them anti-roll things in her cot so she cant roll over. Ive picked her up and put her on her back but like i said above ill go back in another 15 mins and there she is on her belly again. What should i do to break this habit as im starting to panic when she's in bed and moreless i keep an eye on her. she sleeps through the night.
Should i let her sleep on her belly or what? Im really confused.

Any help would be great thank you

If she is strong enough to roll on to her stomach herself then she is strong enough to sleep on her stomach.

if she is getting herself onto her belly then obviously she'll just keep doing it mo matter how often you turn her back, so just let her sleep that way. If you are still concerned you could try using a baby monitor so you can hear her breathing, but honestly that just drove me insane with DD!

    But wait... there's more!

We did have a baby monitor but it annoyed the crap out of me. I think i only panic so much is because some times she has her face right down and i always fear of SIDS etc.

    thanks for your replies

My nearly 7 month old DD sleeps on her tummy all the time. We have video where I roll her onto her back three times and before my hands have left her she has already started rolling back on her tummy. And she does all of this in her sleep. We have two breathing sensor pads underneath her matress and are confident that that will go off if she stops breathing.

We came to the conclusion that if she really wants to sleep on her tummy she will.

Noah started sleeping on his tum at like 5-6 months, there was no rolling him back. If she's strong enough to get there, like the others have said, I would just leave her be. I would also take the anti-roll thing out, as it would now probably present as more of a hazard than her actually being on her tummy iykwim.

SIDS recommend you PUT THEM TO SLEEP on their back, not that you tie them down so they stay that way. Babies will move and you just can't stop them.

DS is a bit younger than yours, and he goes down on his back, and by morning he's done a few laps of the cot and is usually on his tummy tucked into one corner head first LOL

What you can do for peace of mind is make sure the rest of the cot is SIDS safe, which means no doonas, no pillow, no loose blankets or snugglies, and no soft toys. That way no matter what there's nothing for bubs to snuggle into that could possible interfere with their breathing.

The SIDS recommendations really should read:

Sleep baby on back until they are old enough to turn from tummy to back at will with ease.

Because honestly, once they start doing so, they will sleep however is comfiest for them, just like we do

my dd has been a tummy sleeper since around 4.5mths during the day & 6.5-7mths at night (she was swaddled until then) and now still is at 14mths. I freaked at first but we do have an angelcare so that helped, but I was still very nervous. I agree with pp, if she can roll over she'll be fine
