Default help my 9 month old is constipated

hi my DS is 9months and he is breastfeed, he has been having trouble doing poohs.when he turned 3months he would go every 4 days, they said it was normally for a breastfeed, so i was ok with that. well he started eating solids at 7months. i tryied drops, sugar and water, prune juice and nothing helps. his bottom is bleeding when he does one (sometimes) when he is having trouble it is only enough that it's the size of a 5 piece. the docotor said just to give him mashed fruit that's not helping. can anyone help

    Hi Ladies,

my DD is going through this at the moment as well, poor little mite . She cries every time she has to poop.... I saw our paediatrician on Monday and he said she can have coloxyl drops or actilax. The coloxyl drops she can have 3 times a day, or the actilax 2,5 or 10mls per day depending on its effect IYKWIM. He said to just try a small dose (2mls for eg.) and just titrate up until you have the desired effect. So far we are trying the coloxyl. He said that neither of these medications will cause a problem for her long term at all because they are just a softner and not a laxative. They just help to keep fluid in the bowel motion thus making it a bit softer and easier for them to pass. Maybe give them a go a see if it helps?? Goodluck. Constipation is just horrible. Breaks my heart when she needs to do a pooh. DD just wont push sometimes cos it hurts her... Oh yeah, with DD she wont poop in her nappy either, I think because she cant get it out. I have to hold her over the toilet or the potty with her legs right up so that it will come out. Maybe this might help with your little ones??

Does he eat bananas and/or weetbix? These can be constipating in babies so avoid them. My oldest DD had trouble as a baby and the dr advised avoiding these 2 foods in particular. Once we made a few changes to her diet she never had anymore problems.

Pear juice can help but make sure you buy the cloudy one - usually found in a tin in the fruit juice aisle, not the clear one found in the baby food section of the supermarket.

Also with mashed fruit are you leaving the skin on? The fibre in the skin is good for constipation so leave it on - might mean having to puree it rather than mash it.

    Goodluck.

Try increasing his water intake and if it comes down to it, you can get glycerin suppositories from the chemist, not really pleasant, but it should get the job done. Poor little guy

Just as a matter of interest, coloxyl though recommended, can give bub terrible belly ache (it certainly gives adults shocking belly ache). The atilax or lactulose is very effective but a bit gentler on the tum. HTH.

I'd also avoid the Weetbix as suggested by a pp as this REALLY constipated DS. Its too complex for their digestive systems at this age.

    Good luck with your bub

The best things to produce poo are the 'P' foods, pears and pear juice, plums and prune juice, mashed pumpkin, mashed sweet potato, peaches

Also lots of water - constipation is often from dehydration

Fruit juice will only help if it is cloudy and has some fibre, but often fruit juice actually causes diarrohea as it causes a frustose inbalance (too much fruit sugars)

Avoid mashed banana unless it's really ripe - banana often binds up kids, as does wheatbix and hard cheese.

Wheatbix often doesn't have enough liquid

Also a good natural yoghurt like Jalna with lots of probiotics will help to even out the gut flora which is also necessary for proper digestion

Default help my 9 month old

Just to say, don't give her any more bananas as it'll make the constipation worse!
Stick to the foods recommended by workingclassmum. And if that's not working, there's always the suppositories.
