Default Downstairs are having a rowdy party tonight!

I dont know what annoys me more, that they're being noisy, shouting, talking loudly, playing thumping music etc...

... or that we're never invited!

If you lived in a building with only 6 units would you invite and/or warn your neighbours you were having a big party?

Totally!! I probably wouldn't invite them unless I was really close to them, but the other units should know.

I'm mostly joking about the invite - its what my father used to do when I was growing up, he said the best way to stop your neighbours from reporting you for nise pollution was to invite them!

Their parties always follow the same pattern - really noisey in the evening through to about 2am, then they turn off the music and someone plays and sings with an acustic guitar on the balcony - as pot smoke wafts gently into our kitchen...

Back before I lived here I had an apartment in a complex of 12. I was the only one there under 40. We didnt have parties but I did invite the only other person my age (from the unit's next door no fence and he was directly across from us so could see us in the loungeroom) if we were doing anything. BF was totally against it as he felt that if we had a falling out it would be awkward.

I was always taught to warn neighbours of parties but these days everyone's so grumpy and self orientated I can imagine it not happening.

Here they dont speak to neighbours at all - in one or two generations they've gone from living in the counrtyside where everyone knows your business (down to old ladys checking your garbage) to huge apartments with thousaunds of residents each doing their very best to avoid eye contact with each other. They will even wait for next lift so they dont have to ride together. As you are walking down the corridor you can see people come out of their doorways, realise someone else is around a quickly duck back in until you have passed so they dont have to acknowledge you. It's very, very sad but with all the crime and scariness all over the world these days somethings gunna have to drastically change or I can see everyone living like this.

oh dear... i had to laugh at the eloquently stated "pot smoke wafting gently into our kitchen"

I have to say i have never been invited to anything in our unit complex... but we are a mixed bunch. The first night we moved in, the people down stairs had a huge party with loud bollywood music... i was thinking to myself "oh dear, what have we got ourselves into"... at least it wasn't typical 'doof, doof' party music

Hope the party dies down soon

I grew up in the country, I do find the social dynamics of Sydney pretty weird. We know our neighbours directly across the hallway, but only because we both have children. Its funny, the mother always stops to help me with my pram up and down the stairs and she's a tiny Japanese lady - and the big burly Aussie husband watches us lug my massive pram looking awkward and embarressed. But then, when I've bumped into him with my pram and she's not around the best he'll do is hold the door for me! Not that I expect people to help me, I manage fine on my own, I just think its funny.

In our building of 6 units I think everyone is in their 20s to early 30s. Maybe if we have a party here I'll set the precedent and invite everyone

I had neighbours who loved this one song and played it so loudly and sang really badly to it. I was able to handle it, as it was a pretty cool song, for a couple of times, but when it was still happening at 3am I wasn't so impressed!

We used to live in a unit complex of 8 and popped notes in the letterboxes if we had something.

We actually got a note in the letterbox last week from a house around the corner about a party saying there would be loud music and put her mobile number of there, we didnt even think we would hear anything because of the distance away, but soon realised by she dropped notes. I only got 3hrs sleep for the night & dd about 6hrs due to their party, but i didn't do anything as she'd done the right thing with the notes
