Moving to Toowoomba @ 33 weeks- First time mum 2B needs help

Hi Ladies

My partner and I have to relocate to Toowoomba in 6 weeks from WA and I'll be 33 weeks pregnant with our first little boy at the time.

I'm starting to panick a little about the birth and the whole relocating to a new town, finding a rental etc, so late in pregnancy.

I keep trying to call Toowoomba base hospital and ask them to send me out some information on what to expect, information on classes and proceedures etc and I keep getting stoned walled. My Dr (I've tried 2 now) and hospital over here arent being helpful about classes or what to expect because I wont be here for the end of my pregnancy, & seem relucant to see me at all even for monthly check ups, they just keep telling me to contact the hospital over there for information.

Can anyone tell me anything about what to expect at the hospital, if you have given birth there what was it like? does anyone know of any classes running from the mid to end of July that I could attend, or just any general tips for living in Toowoomba or being pregnant and moving (apart from I'm crazy for moving that late lol, I have no other option), what kind of baby shops are there in town, anything at all would be great to help ease a overly stressed out hormonal lady.

Hi there,

I lived in twba for the last 8 yrs and really love it. I went thru the base for DS1 in 2007 and they were great. They have nice big birthing suites with the usual stuff such as stools, balls, gas showers etc. The twba base has the highest number of births per yr in qld so they are very experienced (and busy). Not sure if you've just talked to the hosp or the actual antenatal clinic but the number for the clinic is (07) 4616 6201 they run classes every week. I would suggest as soon as you get here see a gp who will refer you to the hosp and they get you into the classes.

Be warned the weather when you arrive is going to be very cold The city is on the Great Dividing Range so is very windy and we get alot of cold wet foggy days.

As for baby shops we have a few and they can order stuff in. Also we are only 90mins from brisbane so you could always do a day trip for shopping

thanks so much the response - to be honest I'm kind of really looking forward to the cold weather great weather to be all nice and snug in or out on a wintery walk in a park.

thanks so much for the info on the hospital and the clinic, I gave them a call and they said just to go straight there as soon as I arrive so yay hopefully will still have time to do a tour and some classes to get to know the place a bit better.

Do you by any chance have any suggestion on which part of town would be best to look at for a place to rent that isnt dodgy?

Im from Toowoomba but don't have my own bubbies yet!

I was studying Early Childhood Edu at USQ last year and now am a teacher in a QLD state school 3 hrs west of Toowoomba but still go back there most weekends as DP lives and works in Toowoomba!

Anyway - cant help you with the hospital side of things - but I can help with dodgy areas to avoid...

the MAJOR one is Harlaxton!!! Do NOT rent there!

Harristown and Wilstonton are also a bit iffy but I am pretty fussy!

I would suggest Middle Ridge, Kearney Springs and East Toowoomba. I lived near the Uni for 4 year (Kearney Springs) and LOVED it! It wasn't full of noisy partying Uni students even tho its close to the Uni! It had nice young families and lots of great parks! Middle Ridge is very simular!

Hi there, I have lived in Toowoomba for many years, then went overseas. I am moving back up there when bubby is 12weeks old (as we are staying here near Brissy until then as we are all booked into a gr8 private hospital here).

Anyway, the nicest suburbs are Kearny Springs, Middle Ridge. They have a HUGE multi story shopping centre with all the normal shops - kmart, target, loads of specialty shops and pumpkin patch style botique baby shop.

As for the hospital, well i was visiting family there last week and popped in for a checkup,,,,, welll they were really busy so we left.... but i have heard good things about the staff and labour ward. There is a gr8 private hospital as well, St Vincents.

If you like acerage living, there is a lovely estate called High Fields just 8mins from Toowoomba with new homes on 1/2 to 1 acre lots with lots of families. I just love it there. We however are looking at Kearny Springs for first home affordability.

Wow hope this all helps. Toowoomba is a lovely place to live and has the most FANTASTIC schools in Qld.
