Default Adult Acne who should I see first GP, Dermatologist or Natropath???

Ok it's at the point where over the counter products are not working & I am over it. I need answers as to why this stupid acne won't go away. I am almost 25 for goodness sakes! I have asked the doctor in the past regarding this but they sort of made me feel bad as if it was a trivial issue & I have been scared to ask about it again & I also hate going to the doctors. But I am at the point where I don't care I need help.

Can anyone tell me where I should go first? Can you go directly to a dermatologist or do you need a referral? How much will going to a dertamtologist cost me? Is a natropath a good idea instead? How much will that cost me?

If anyone has gone to see any professionals for their acne can you please tell me how it went, was it successful? What do you reccommend?

I am in Brisbane if anyone has any specific doc's they might reccommend.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lol, that's an interesting response !! (the one above I mean )

I went to see a dermatologist years ago, when I was around your age actually. I had awful acne and was really embarrassed. I was living in France at the time, and they are quite serious about their doctoring over there lol. The dermatologist took me very seriously and put me on a course of antibiotics. I think it cleared up pretty much immediately.

I think to see a dermatologist here you need a referral first??? If your GP makes you feel uncomfortable, go see another one, he/she is a knob. It's very upsetting to have problem skin, especially when you should be past all that.

My mum saw a skin specialist at the North West Private hospital (on the northside of Brisbane) she had adult acne and had for years they gave her roaccutane it took 2 courses to clear it up but her skin is soooo much better now she does still get the odd break out (which isn't supposed to happen). It does hve some pretty nasty side effects including drying out all your mucous membranes (nose mouth vja jay) and you have to avoid the sun too but for bad cases that nothing else works for worth it.
However your Dr (or a new Dr since yours was a drop kick) can prescribe anitbiotics.

Oooh I jsut remembered I saw a naturapath at a chemist when I was a teenager they gave me this HORRIBLE stuff to drink but it did help clear up my skin (but mine wasn't too bad)

my mum was prescribed the same thing, she went to her GP and he gave her a referral to a specialist, she had a few courses of this and has never had it that bad again. she had tried everything before this.

(i am not in brisbane) but i would go see a GP and they can point you in the right direction.

I summond the courage to go to the doc's about my acne & she was pretty nice about it. She prescribed me an antibiotic minocycline 50mg to take for a month. I have been taking it for almost 2 weeks now & thus far no improvement I think I recall taking an antibiotic years ago when I went to the docs about it & it didn't work then either but thought I'd give it a go again. Perhaps it takes a little longer before it starts to work . But then again I also don't want to be on antibiotics for the rest of my life!?!?! Has anyone else had this antibiotic?

The doc said she would refer me to a dermatoligist or a specialist if this doesn't work, so hopefully in 2 weeks I will be on something that works. Well if the specialists are not to booked out .

Has the pill helped anyone with their acne? I think I went on Diane years ago & that didn't help either . I want to get the pill anyway so might try that again.

Think I might have to do a complete detox. Maybe it's something in my sytem?

Any other idea's for acne people's please throw them at me! Cheers.

My DF had horrendous acne when i first met him... he was on medication (roaccutaine) sp??

It cleared up... but it did take a while. If he has any problems he goes back and gets another medication, i actually think it's the one you have been prescribed but im not 100% sure. But in his experience, when taking the meds, it always gets worse, before it gets better.

Lets hope you see some improvement soon

I looked Roaccutane up on Wiki & it's not what I am on at the moment. It's also called Isotretinoin (among other things) & is also used as a chemotherapy medication! It sounds tough to get & quite hardcore!

I am currently on minocycline which doesn't quite sound as scary!

I guess I will just have to wait & see what happens & continue with the proactive routine . Answers shall start appearing soon now that I have taken some action .

I just asked him.. he was on roaccutane, but when his skin cleared up he was put onto minocycline. That is what he uses now when he has any 'flair up' issues... for him it does make it worse at first, but begins to work eventually.

Lets hope you have a similar outcome
