*Cloth Nappies* Help Please!

Hi everyone,

I'm wanting to start saving for cloth nappies and I'm totally confused! Greenkids, Bumgenious, the list goes on and my mind screams WHAT?????

I would like:
* to start my baby in cloth nappies from birth
* to have one size that fits through to T/T
* to have nappies that can be used overnight as well as during the day - I will change when needed, and not leave bubba in a wet nappy (so longer absorbancy is not a drama)

I really love the look of Greenkids. The seem to be really good, eco friendly etc whereas other websites just confuse me with AO1s and all that other stuff.

So basically, I'm asking you for an honest opinion...

What modern cloth nappy should I go for AND how many would I need?

Each bub is different. I have a mix of AIO's and pockets. I use them all, and like them all. Greenkids are good and can be stuffed for overnight. BBH magicalls are good and also have a pocket you can boost for night.

I checked out BBH magicalls and Itti's however, they come in sizes so I imagine that you need to restock from the intial outlay of costs... Is that correct?

What are the benefits, of getting BBHs' or Itti's in their respective sizes, compared to Greenkids - or a similar brand who say One Size Fits All till Toilet Training???

I understand it depends on the baby... but you have to buy something before the baby is born!

I never used MCN's from birth so i started out with Mediums which fit well even now at 13 months old. ( stated wearing them at 3 months old) in the beginning i used terry flats.

Ittis are definitely trimmer but i have found that a size M on my bub leaks where as all my other 'sized' mediums fit fine, no leaks.

I just like the look of Magicalls, But must say that green kids are really good, come in Nice fancy patterns if needed and absorbency can be to suit. I know they say they fit from birth but i put one on my friends 3 wk old bub and it was humongous!!! Like nearly up to her chin!!!

All in ones take a long time on drying, like a full day in the sun, so i think if you have AIO's you will need a bigger stash. With my green kids, i often dry the outers in the dryer (the boosters and inserts take ages to dry) and i have spare lots of inserts and boosters while i wait for the others to line dry! Just because you have green kids doesn't mean you have to use their inserts, i use pea pods tri folds and a micro fiber insert and it does us through the night.

Green kids are definitely a great choice, and in all honesty, if i had a stash that was only green kids, i would be happy.

I mostly use my AIO's when we go out because the ones i have are all pretty

For home, they just take to long to dry!

I use a few different brands, but mostly Baby BeeHinds, both fitted bamboo/hemp nappies and Magic-Alls.

The main advantage of the Magic-Alls is that they are very convenient and easy to use - however, they are a sized system and you need to upgrade as baby gets bigger. Lots of babies can start wearing mediums from quite a young age, so you could save on smalls and just use flats & covers for the newborn stage and then go straight to mediums (my DD is still fitting mediums @ 18 mths of age). The other advantage of a sized system is that they are still likely to be in really good condition for subsequent bubs, because they won't have as heavy use as an OSFA, which might be a bit past-it after 3 years or so of use. I'd probably get 18 or so (as a minimum) and a few fitteds.

The BBH fitted nappies are very absorbent for night time (most people don't change nappies overnight once baby is sleeping through), and in my opinion are the most economical choice. A really good set-up of these would be about 25 nappies and 5-6 covers in each size.

I have a few Greenkids and I like them a lot (especially the gorgeous printed designs). The inserts take a looooong time to dry so you may want to buy more inserts than pockets (the pockets dry quickly) - but I don't think they'd fit well on a newborn (I'm not sure though, I've never actually tried). And the inserts aren't included with the nappy, so it's about $35+ for each nappy & insert.

Ideally, I'd start off with flat nappies and a few covers for the first few weeks so then you can buy one or two of each nappy once bub is actually here and try them out for yourself.
