Default Worried about my 9 week old

My Son turned 9 weeks old today and he still hasn't smiled. I have been reading that babies should smile by 6 weeks and all the other babies in my mothers group are smiling away.

He has had really bad reflux and has generally been an uphappy baby so far would this stop him from smiling or is there something else wrong? Someone mentioned to me that children with autism don't smile so now I am worried that he may have something like autism?

Have anyone elses babies not smiled by 9 weeks?

    Thanks

Hmm, that does seem a little odd. He definately should be smiling. Don't worry some babies dno't have an easy humour...Try just copying his facial expressions, worked with Sibel when trying to make her smile..

Does he do anything else that is different?

Also if he is generally a upset baby due to his reflux he just might not amused easily..

Babies like to do things in their own time...and unfortunately as they can't read yet, they don't know when they are 'supposed' to be reaching their milestones.

My son and daughter seem to have reached their milestones at completely different times.

If you are really worried, then take him to your paediatrician for a check up. Otherwise just enjoy him and I'm sure that he will reward you with a little grin when you least expect it.

Please don't compare him with other babies - I know how easy it is to do that when they are your first born, however it honestly will just do your head in.

My DS was a late smiler too.

When I saw the paed she asked me how much I smiled at him. The answer was not much because I was really stressed and unhappy.

They do mirror what they see so is it possible that he may not be getting a lot of smiles from you if you're stressed and unhappy about the reflux?

Once I relaxed and smiled at him, he started smilling back at me in no time.

I think it is a reflux thing. DS2 hardly smiles unless he is having a good day with his reflux.

DD1 had reflux, too. and she didn't smile til she was 5 MONTHS! She is a totally happy bub now, and talks her little head off, very active etc... So there isn't anything wrong with her.

I spent so much time worrying about her, I never got a chance to just ENJOY her. (I am learning that now with my second)

I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. I mean it is only 3 weeks after when they're "supposed" to do it.

If you are concerned though, maybe have a chat to your GP. They will most probably tell you it is just an average for them to smile at 6 weeks, and not to stress.
When I cry, I am not being naughty or misbehaving; I am not being unreasonable. Please listen to me when I am feeling this way. I know it's hard to listen to me cry. Listen to me so that I don't repress these feelings and turn bitter when I get older. Please don't distract me. I need to deal with these feelings. Offer me hugs and support. Stay with me when I cry. Listen.. Keep listening..
