Default The shawshank redemption - is Andy guilty?

I was watching this movie last night and decided that i think Andy was guilty of the crime that sent him to prison.

I have seen the movie many times and always just assumed he was innocent but didn't feel that way this time.

I wonder what other peoples thoughts are??

I reckon he was innocent.. what made u think Guilt this time around?

I do think he is a "lateral" thinker and may have been guilty of other simmilar crimes that he was never caught for and always sorta thought "well, this is my pennance" - but innocent of the "convicted" crime..

Now I will have to hunt it out and watch it again today!!

I only watched the first half and the last half is a bit hazy in my memory but what got me thinking was the following:

    • He was outside with a gun and then his gf and her lover got killed. It seems a mighty coincidence that someone else did it (although i guess he could have been framed that way )
    • He doesn't show much emotion (if any) and i tend to think if you were sent to life in prison for a crime you didn't do wouldn't you be more upset?
    • One scene where Red asks him if he did it and he says 'I'm innocent, like everyone else in here' seemed like a subtle confession to me
    • I think he maybe assumed he would get away with it and had to keep up the innocent story or any chance of getting off would be ruined
    • Or maybe he went crazy for a short while - did it - but blocked it out and truly thinks he is innocent but isn't
then again perhaps i think too much

Lots of views but only one reply - surely if you have seen the movie you have an opinion either way

    It is my favourite movie.

I am sort of the same as you...leaning towards guilt.

I have previously always thought innocent though.

    I dunno.

This is one of my favourite movies and I too always assumed he was innocent.

The more I think about it though - you may be right and perhaps he was guilty

I didn't watch it the other night but have it on DVD so I might just pull it out and watch it tonight....

Nope....innocent. The "fonzie" type guy shared a cell with someone else who boasted he killed a rich Bankers wife and her lover and the rich Banker aka Andy was done for the crime. Innocent

It is one of my favourite movies too.
