Okay, so DD3 is almost 4 mths and anything that goes near her mouth gets chomped on - fingers, toys, books - and a lot of dribble too!

On Friday and Saturday from 12.30pm - 6.00pm she was really hard to settle - crying and only wanted mummy.

On Saturday & Sunday her poos (which aren't solid as she is still fully B/F) were a horrible dark brown colour with yucky mucous in it. She also had a dirty nappy at every nappy change. Then today, I happened to be changing her nappy and her poo when it came out was runny green and looked like water......she also seemed to be having a hard time pushing it out.

She has no temperature, is feeding well and since Saturday is settling down fine. She is happy and doing all her normal things.

Could this be the start of teething or is it something I need to get checked out by the Doctor?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have much bfing knowledge, but it kind of sounds like an intolerance to me. It could be teeth. My kids got the acidic poos but never the mucus. Hopefully a bfer will come along and provide you with better advice

My DD is teething at the moment and her poos are runny and dark in colour (greenish/dark brown) they are also very loose and what seems to be mucus there also. I have the teething necklace for her so she has been her normal happy self, but I have noticed she is similar to what you described, every nappy change is a dirty nappy.

How long does she feed for? If she's snacking or having short feeds (less than 10 mins on one breast) she may be getting too much foremilk. The foremilk is high in lactose and that can result in dark/green runny poos.

She feeds for 10 - 15 minutes each side (although sometimes it is just one side at a time). So I don't think that is the problem.

I have made a Doctors appt for her today so we'll see what she says.

Im not a doctor but to me it sounds like teething or as delirium said it could just well be an intolerance, have you added anything into her diet of late? The dribbling I could put down to teething also.

She's not on any solids yet so it can't be an intolerance and I haven't changed my diet in anyway.

Have a dr's appt this arvo and I will be taking one of her nappies up (which should be fun) so that dr can see what I mean. I'm assuming it's nothing serious as she is her bright happy self and sleeps well. Just that yucky green poo!

Well I took Hayley to the Dr's this arvo and the dr took a sample of her poo for testing. I have to go back on Friday for the results and if they are all clear she wants to vax Hayley. She seems to think that it could have been something that I had eaten that didn't previously affect Hayles. As a result, I have been told to not have Dairy products and see if that could be the problem. There goes my plan to eat my Chocolate Ice-cream!! Will keep everyone updated as to what the results are.

She mentioned as well that at 4 mths Hayles should be around the 6kg mark but she is only 5230grams. This got me worried as looking back at my other two girls, they weighed 6020gm & 6150gms at 4 mths.

Has anyone else had this weight issue come up and what did you do?

Yes! DD2 had green runny explosive poos and poor weight gain (she was 5.1kgs at 4 months although she was a decent 8lb 2oz at birth). It turned out that she suffered from reflux. She was a very chucky baby but because she was always happy and never cried in pain she wasn't diagnosed until 6 months.

I was the one who asked you earlier if your DD feeds for longer than 10 mins on each side. The reason I asked is cos my DD2 was only feeding 5mins each side, she was just 'snacking'. This was due to her reflux. She worked out that if she only had a small top up at each feed it would be less painful for her. So, once she'd fed for 5mins she'd then arch her back and pull away. This also meant that she was only ever getting the foremilk which is high in lactose (causing the green poos) and also this was the reason for her poor weight gain.

At 6 months I ended up switching her to formula. She is still a little bub, but at least she's gaining sufficient weight now.

Not sure if that helps you, but the symptoms do sound similar. Maybe worth asking your GP if this could be the issue?

Thanks for your advice monkeytoes. I have her follow up appt tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

The only difference between Hayles and your DD2 is that she doesn't really chuck up all that much after a feed - and when she does it is only a little bit when she brings up her wind....but I will certainly run it by the Dr tomorrow and let you know what she says. Is there any test for reflux??
