repainting kitchen

Hi All,
we cant afford at this stage to renovate our kitchen but we haev been told that you can paint the cupboards a different colour.
is this just with normal paint or is the a special one?

Has anyone done this before?

what about the laminate benchtop? can anything be done with that?

There is a special laminate paint and primer for the kitchen cupboards - I think White King makes it. One hint - take the doors off and lay flat and use a roller (small one). It gives a much better finish and no drips.

The other thing we did was put new handles on the doors (chrome slimline ones) and it looks much more modern.
