Not ideal no.. but baby will be getting its quota of nutrients. BUT mum wont be left with anything since there isnt much to start with and this could lead to problems (as already described).

Obviously a reasonably healthy diet including lots of fresh fruit and veg and plenty of water is the most ideal while BF, not only for baby but for mother. But it is amazing how baby cant get the things it needs from BM, even if the mothers diet is less than desirable.

I would say its getting all the nutrients you have that being said if you arnt getting enough nutrients through the food your eating your baby must be missing out on some important things cos if you had only had coke and cr@p thats essentially what they would get.
They would still get your antibodies but if you have only eaten cr@p what nutrients could you pass on when you dont have any yourself.

Was wondering same thing myself.. Just thinking bout the "everything you eat and drink is transmitted" - thats why you avoid Booze isn't it?
Goose - come back!!!! Explain more!! Pls! _ would the bubba be getting waste too?

Well as a baby is technically a parasite, it will suck every last drop of nutrient out of you, so it's always mum's health that suffers the most if she has a poor diet.

That said, women in third world countries with very little food etc are still better to breastfeed, as generally their milk is still of a high enough quality to totally nourish the baby.

Obviously if you only eat fast food or somthing, you are going to have high levels of nasty fats in your system, and I fail to see how it cannot pass to the baby in some shape or form, but generally speaking, maternal diet shouldn't impact too badly on the milk, you'll still have a very healthy bubba, loads of things are actually manufactured in our bodies, so not everything that goes into the milk is directly from diet.

Thanks for that AM. - So the Bub's may get some waste, but the body directs most of that to Mum and still directs all the good stuff to the BM.. Freaking amazing what a body can do

Certain bad elements of the mothers diet are passed through as well - I had a pretty bad diet when I was pregnant with Sofia, and I don't think it was coincidence that she was very sensititive to any yeasty products (I had to give up bread and most baked products while I was bf) as well as sugars.

If I had a sugar binge (lollies - I have a problem there) Sofia would be in pain for hours until it passed through her system. Unfortunately it took me a while to figure this out and I was when I did.

I think the basic makeup of your milk will contain the nutrients bubs needs most - but lousy diet means lousy milk quality in other ways.

TOTALLY amazing!! I guess that's what survival of the species is all about... Exploiting mum of every resource she has, to make sure the offspring make it to maturity and are healthy enough to reproduce themselves...
