Default People with negative blood types.

When I was about to be discharged from the hospital on Christmas Eve, the rude doctor [the one who pointed out I was too young and needed an abortion, even thoughh it was none of his business]... said because I have B-Negative blood, and have had bled a couple times during this pregnancy, and was given Anti-D, that in future I may not be able to have another baby after this one.

Has anyone else been told this about their blood type? He said that my body will attack the baby's antibodies next time around, therefore I will most likely never be able to have a baby again without it resulting in misscarriage. Even though I am not planning another baby, perhaps in 5/6 years time I will be, then what? I am only 16, how will I be able to concieve again?

I am really worried!! I should have asked more questions, but I was standing there shocked about all of it. Has anyone else been told this? What was their outcome? If I have more Anti-D now, will it be better for future pregnancies? Also, if I have negative blood and the baby's father has positive blood, does that mean it will definitely have positive blood, or is there a chance it may also have my negative blood?

    Hi Jazzlyn!

Your post made me really, really mad!!!!

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS AWFUL DOCTOR WHO SHOULD NOT BE PRACTISING MEDICINE!!!

Firstly, it is totally morally and ethically wrong that he advised you to have an abortion! What an ***$%le!!!

Secondly, as a Reg Nurse, I can gladly tell you that everything he said was totally false!

You have every chance of getting pregnant in the future and carrying a baby to term!

Just because you are a negative blood type, and needed anti - D does not mean anything at all!

I am O Neg, and so is my husband, so I did not need the anti - D, but if you have a future pregnancy with a partner who has a positive blood type, you should be able to have Anti - D early on if need be and throughout your pregnancy to stop your body from rejecting the pregnancy.

My SIL has 2 beautiful sons and she is a Negative Blood type and her husband is a Positive blood type. Unfortunately it took 2 miscarrages before her first son was born to work out the problem (Again...a negligent doctor...GRRRRRR!!!!) For both of her pregnancies she had several lots of Anti-D and from quite early in the pregnancy.

If they know you may have an issue, it should be quite the opposite in fact! They should be aware of potential problems and be able to prevent them in some cases!

I would most certainly not listen to a word this rubbish Doctor has to say and verify it with your own OB whenever you see him/her throughout your pregnancy.

Also, more or less Anti-D now will not affect future pregnancies. Every pregnancy/baby is different. Your baby/future babies with a partner who is a positive blood type will themselves end up being either negative or positive. There are many possibilities depending on both of your exact blood types. Again, ask your OB ahen you see him/her.

I wish you all the best with this pregnancy and every future pregnancy you may choose to have!

My mother is rh neg, and has had 3 kids. I am too, and I think with future pregnancies all I need to do is get a check to see if I am at risk with the antibodies (or if I have them) and get the anti d shot early on. This is because I have a positive blood group partner, and my dd is postive too. I think this is how it works anyway.

oh u scared me.. i have 0 neg blood as well and had to have the anti d shot when i was about 6 weeks pregnant cos i had some slight bleeding. when i go back to the hospital next month at 28 and then again at 32 weeks i need another anti d shot both times and once after the baby is born they told. they never said that i wouldnt be able to concieve again. but they did say that its better for me to have it in case the baby has positive blood, and in case my blood and the babies blood mix durning anytime the anti d will help. dp is not sure what his blood type is.

Don't listen to the doctor....he is obviously prejudiced when it comes to young mums.....I am A negative and have just had my third child....I had Anti D shots during all my pregnancies as well as 24 hrs after giving birth. All my kids have a positive blood group and I had no trouble conceiving. After the birth of my third ( and probably after the birth of my other two though I don't really remember), they gave me a blood test in the hospital to see if I had developed antibodies. Did you have this blood test? If not, it might be worthwhile talking to your OB/GYN.......

I am not sure exactly whether I had it, when I went to the hospital... both times they took about 4 tubes of blood. But another one of the doctors told me that I should to go the doctors soon, so I am going on Sunday and getting a blood test... it starts with C I think. Do you remember what the test was calld?

I had a bleed at about 9 weeks, only small but I didn't yet know that I was a neg blood type, so I didn't get the shot. Which I think means I will need to get tested before TTC another baby.. I'm not 100% on what the deal is there, someone care to fill me in please?
I had all the other shots you are supposed to have through pregnancy and after birth though.

If you do have negative blood type, and your partner has posative blood, and you have a bleed in pregnancy, you should usually be given the anti-d shot (in addition to the standard times)

This is to prevent your body building up antibodies to reject this or future babies.

If you didnt have the injection .... dont stress. When you are ready to have your next bub, or when you find out that you are pregnant (if its unplanned) - go to the doc and explain. They will do blood tests (and you will have them fairly regularly throughout that pregnancy) to check if you have developed antibodies.

If you have, it can be a problem .... but also doesnt necessarily mean that you will automatically misscarry ....is just some extra issues.

To the OP - I agree with MissMilliesMum - totally ignore this complete D@#$head. He is an idiot and should not be practising medicine.

I had the Anti-D on sunday with the first bleed [apparently was only brown spotting, so they just gave it to me to be sure]. But after my second bleed on wednesday, they said they most likely gave me enough for both bleeds, but wasnt sure? Wtf, wouldnt it cover all bleeds [hopefully NO MORE] till my next shot at 28, then 34 weeks?

I'm seriously shocked that this 'doctor' would give you this advice! And frankly, I would make a complaint because what he has told you is so untrue and false! You could also complain about him advising you to get an abortion, that is none of his damn business

Anyways, I am A- and my partner has positive blood. I had to have the normal anti D shots, and the injection when I had slight bleeds during my pregnancies. I've been pregnant 4 times. My first daughter was born with positive blood, and my second daughter has negative blood.

I've never been once told that there's no way I can have more children, because it's NOT true. Don't listen to him, he shouldn't be giving out such false advice
