What will I need?

Hi everyone,

Our second baby is due in April and I was hoping someone can help me work out how many nappies I will need for a newborn? I used cloth on DD but only started when she was 14 months so most our nappies are larger sizes.

I have 11 one-sized nappies (8 if bubs is a boy!) Mainly GK's and BBB plus one BG. So what else should I get? Would I be better off buying some small sized nappies? What nappies are good on newborns? I was thinking maybe Magic-alls, Bubblebubs or Itti Bitti's... Maybe Swaddlebees too? And how many? So many questions

Also if it makes a difference DD was a premmie and also low birth weight so I am expecting a smaller baby again.

I have been using cloth since my dd was 4 weeks old and although I had BG one size, GK one size, tots bots size 1 & small magicall, the only nappy that fitted ok was the small aio bg. Now I also have itti bittis and they would have been ok when she was really little too. The small magicall didn't fit until she was about 2 mths. My dd was 3.5kg at birth and now at 3 months is 5.3kg, if that helps.

As for how many, I have 17 which is just enough. I guess you would need a little more for a newborn though.

If your bub is on the small side, you'll definately need some small or newborn nappies... or use prefolds/flats. OSFM usually go from 5kg, so generally won't fit newborns.
The average newborn goes through up to 10 nappies a day So thats a decent figure to go from, then work out how often you'll be washing and all that. I'll be getting at least 20 smalls when we have our next bub, plus a couple of newborns and covers. I already have a ton of flats, so I'll be covered.

Not sure what type of nappy is good on a newbie, I only used flats with mine.. but every baby is different, so my guess would be they would all differ.

I'd get some magicalls though, truth be told. I'm a little addicted to them, the gussets would contain those newborn poosplosions and I don't think you'd even need the insert because they're changed so often! Unless you have a bub who sleeps through from day one!

I'm due in March.

For my bub I have 6 NB size bamboo fleece prefolds and 6 size 2L bamboo fleece prefolds, a kissaluv and two magic-alls and some covers.

I chose prefolds because I like the idea of being able to use them as stuffers/boosters later and got some Magic-Alls for convenience.

I may or may not get more, but I am pretty sure I should be set.

In my bigger stash I also have some OSFA BBB and Booroi testers (made by Booroi), a ton of Magic-Alls, some more Kissaluvs and a pair of CGRs.

No flats or prefolds How do prefolds work? Are they easy enough to use?

Prefolds are basically a flat but with a thicker part in the middle.

You lay it flat and fold in the bottom two corners and just put it on.

As I said before, I bought Bamboo Fleece prefolds (from Booroi) and they are lovely.

I was looking at cotton, but cotton is nowhere near as absorbent and though its cheaper, I'd rather pay $8 per prefold than $3 per prefold and get ones that will last the distance.

I was tossing up between the Booroi ones and the Swaddlebees ones. I chose Booroi ones in the end because 1: I liked the colours better, 2: They looked fluffier and 3: They were $8 each instead of $13.
