    Default Memoirs of a Geisha

I know a few of you have read this book and now seen the flick.
For those that read the book: Did you like it?
    Yes?
    No?
    Why?

I have the image of a thirty something year old Geisha accompanying her eldery sugar Danna to the mens facilities a little bit irksome.
    Maybe its just me?

I really liked the book, but their are not that many books that I dont like. I havent seen the movie though. I also liked the book Geisha of Gion which was kinda the same book but non fictional (the novel was based on the woman in Geisha of Gion) I liked the total difference in culture it gave me a lot to think about. I think I appreciated the fact that these women go through lots of training and years of schooling and theirs much more to it than them getting paid for sex, which if I had not red the book I would not have known. At any rate I enjoyed the book

Yes (but it was a long time between reading the book and seeing the movie). Prior to reading the book I knew nothing about Geisha's and was very surprised by alot of it.

    Why?

A very interesting and descriptive insight into the life of a Geisha, no detail left untold. I always get a mental picture when I am reading a book (of the characters and the scenery / setting) and I was amazed at how spot on the film was.

It's one of my favourite books, in my top 10. I can't remember how many times I've read it but it's always fresh and difficult to put down. I've yet to see the film, but invariably I'm disappointed when I see a movie made from a book I love. I'll see it when I see it.... no hurry.

I love the book for so many reasons, I'm so surprised that a man wrote it, and as a first novel. I loved the richness of the characters, and the ability Arthur Golden has to paint a picture with words.

Well yes, but that's the culture. Personally I found the bidding over her mizuage more disturbing. That doctor was creepy.

i read it when i was trying to get over some jet lag that lasted for a week or so. i was up reading many books through the nights of that week. i remember that i liked it but can't remember enough to tell you except that i felt sorry for the main character. i don't plan on seeing th movie because the book is almost always better.

As far as the movie goes.. I hear they have the main role being played by a Chinese actress??

    Surely not?

    Culture schmulture Razzle.....Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww....

The author's descriptions are very beautiful but they are also very apt in respect to the descriptions of the kimono's.
I cant beleive how incredibly beautiful these artworks are.
If I had a spare $10,000....I'd get myself one to display at home on a wall.

I have read the book and seen the movie and as with all, the book is way better. I admit though, that the movie was pretty good though. The only things that annoyed me was that they spoke in ENGLISH and the two main characters were CHINESE!! It was really hard to understand what they were saying. I would have preferred it in Japanese with subtitles (more authentic) but apart from that, the setting and they way it was presented was just how I imagined it while reading the book.
Call me morbid but I love books about the human strength under sufferage.
