'Silly' things people say

I went to Medicare yesterday to get money back from mine and DD#3's Drs visit last week. We are still waiting on the birth certificate to come through, but I thought I'd ask for the registration forms so I could fill them out to make it easier when the certificate comes through to register her with medicare. So of course I got the "Didn't your midwife give you the forms?" so I explained that she was born unassisted to which I got the reply "Can you do that?". I nearly fell off the chair I was sitting on. I was so tempted to say "Well it appears that I did it, so it must be possible" or some other smart **** comment.

So what 'silly' things have people said to you about your freebirth or your intended freebirth?

When I met a complete stranger at the Bubhub meet when DS was 6 weeks old, I was told...

"Oh my GOD did you know you could have DIED ... what would have happened to your baby...it could have DIED... your Baby could have DIED"

or some very helpful comment to that effect, needless to say that I was not really in the mood such a silly and highly offensive comment.

I explained that DH and I planned to labour at home as long as we could and we did...we were very happy with the labour and I thought I was rather clever for doing it with just DH....even though she still insisted on telling me in great detail how crazy i was when I asked about how she felt her labour was she replied with a horific story of intervention and we all know where that led. Some people just want to share with you their own fears.

How clever we are though for doing it alone!!

Did you explain to her that in fact the baby was in your tummy and was coming out of your vagina so its kind of common sense that you can do it

And hugs shel that just so rude for some one to say that to you

and I am not a free birthign mum, infact not even home birthign my DD was deleivered in theatre via c section, so if i can get it why cant they lol

I kid you not, I get people saying the exact same thing about HOMEBIRTH! I mean, you'd think most people would know about hb, but there you go...

I must admit, I never really thought about hb without a mw before the last few years, I think I always equated birth with at least a mw, (or it was an accident) so i guess it's something not a lot of people even think about really, and when they are confronted with it, the first thing that pops into their mind is often what comes out their mouth

I reckon it is a golden oppurtunity for education

I would be a little surprised too if someone who worked at medicare said that , surely with the hundreds of babies born they get asked for these forms more than once and if you ask for the form do you really have to give an explanation for it all that matters is that the baby is registered not how it was born.

Yes it was a form of entertainment getting the forms.
The woman at Medicare said she never heard of having a baby on your own so that was educating. At the BDM the woman was so confused. I don't think she really knew what to say. Though she did wonder why I didn't go to hosp - surely there would have been complications.

I have heard nasty comments (probably due to fear or ignorance or both) but tbh mostly comments of awe just having a hb. Why?> Birth is so normal!

After attending a homebirth as a Doula, I dropped in to see a family member who lived close by to my client. Elated, I told him all about this amazing birth I'd just witnessed to which her replied "I didn't know people "did" homebirths any more. Why would you if there was a hospital close by?"

After I picked my jaw up from the ground, I explained to him that if I were having a baby now, I'd probably have the baby outside on my own. SHOCK HORROR. He then called me, and anyone else who considers hombirth or freebirth irresponsible.

Idiot...
