Default Falling pregnant naturally for 2nd+ baby/s after IVF success with 1st baby.

I was telling my friend that I was doing IVF and she said "Will you try IVF for the 2nd or try naturally".

I told my cousin that I was doing IVF and she said "I know someone who fell pregnant through IVF for the 1st then naturally for the 2nd"

    My questions is:
    1) How do women fall pregnant 'naturally' after using IVF for the 1st. Is is becuase our hormones 'change' due to the IVF meds or pregnancy therefore making naturall conception possible?

    2) Why do 'others' assume natural conception is possible after the 1st IVF baby? Do they think we are too lazy or stressed to keep on trying naturally and see IVF as an easy way out for the 1st???

This is a question and a vent!

    It is partly hormonal.

It is true that a number of women will fall pregnant naturally after doing IVF. Sometimes during the off cycles while undergoing treatment, or sometimes just naturally after a first bub.

It depends a lot on what is causing your infertility.

If you have blocked tubes, then you can pretty much assume that you wont fall pregnant naturally.

If you have endo, or PCOS or low sperm count etc, then there is every chance that the changes in your body after pregnancy will make a big difference in your chances/ability to conceive.

If you have unexplained infertility, it could simply be a hormonal thing, or a stress thing etc. It doesnt make it any less real this time (just relaxing wont solve it ) but might not be a problem next time.

you need to understand your own circumstances, and decide for yourself what you want to do next time around ..

My best friend had unexplained infertility. She had a m/c, then couldn't fall naturally again after 2.5 more years of trying. She had 3 failed IUI's then success at IVF first go. Nine months after she had her son, she fell pregnant. Nine months after her daughter was born, she fell pregnant again. So her 3rd is due the week after her eldest child's 3rd birthday. She can't believe it and neither can anyone else. So it can happen, somehow.

Katies mum, what you said makes sense, hormones do change. I just needed to hear what other people thought. Thanks.

    Hi Singa06,

I was diagnosed with block tubes and was told ivf was my only chance of having children, so we started that journey. I was lucky enough to fall preg on my 1st cycle both attempts and have had 2 beautiful boys.

As we thought no chance naturally, contraception was never used and 6 months after giving birth to my 2nd boy I fell preg natually and am now 26 weeks with my 3rd boy.

I have since been told that pregnancy can change things in the body, from hormones or what I dont know but something must have shifted in my previous pregs for this to happen

Seems to happen to people all the time doesnt it? Almost as though as soon as the pressure is off to conceive, they fall preggas.

I met a guy in the lift just last week.
He and his wife had their first by ivf.
Twin boys the second time by ivf.
and then baby ooops! a girl, without ivf, because they were told they'd never have kids on their own, they didnt bother using protection.
FOUR KIDS LATER and he's getting the snip!

    Hi Singa,

I have had 3 different people say exactly the same thing to me as well.

To be honest sometimes i think people perhaps are abit naive when it comes to the topic of IVF so say throw away comments like that so that they at least have something to say.

Personally, i dont think having a baby will do anything to fix my DH's sperm!

However in saying that, i also have a girlfriend who had IVF for the first and natural for the second. I dont quite understand her situation but things were twisted and not straight inside her, and being pregnant and giving birth straightened it all out for her!! So it is possible.
