Default Has anyone heard of Parvovirus B19 (Slapped Cheek Syndrome)??

Well today I was told by my sister that her son has come out in a rash and after a dr visit he has said it is Parvovirus B19 or Slapped Cheek Syndrome. But the tricky thing for me is I'm nearly 16weeks pregnant and from what I've read on the net...it's not good for me be exposed to it. When non-pregnant people come into contact with this it causes cold and flu like symptoms, stiff joints, a rash. And if transmitted to the fetus it can lead to severe aneamia which can result in fetal hydrops and death.
I';m totally freaking out and more because I've never heard of anything ike this before. Is there anyone out there can help put my mind at ease???

I can't really help, but can say that you're not the only one stressing at the moment. One of the kids who is at my DD's FDC has brought it in, and our carer is 19 weeks pregnant....4 of the other kids have come up with a rash (not my DD yet, but she has a revolting nose this morning, so could be on its way)....our carer has had to have blood tests and even if she comes up negative, negative must go back and test in 10 days because it has a 4-14 day incubation...so it's all just a waiting game

    everything's okay for you

It has been around for years and comes and goes (well it never really goes I guess!) but I have seen other threads on it. Have you done a search here? - also look for 'slap rash'. Google it as well and you might find out more that will give you medical facts you may be searching for.

I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter going on 2 years ago, my son (now 4) was attending LDC 1 day a week.
Anyway, one morning I read in the communication book (for parents and staff) that a child had come down with Parvovirus (Slapped Cheek) and to advise any women/mums who were pregnant to see their GP.
I was around 12 week pregnant and I immediately freaked out. I thought Parvo was a disease that bats caught; I had no idea what it was.
I was so scared but I saw my GP and she provided me with valuable information and reassurance.
All I can advise is that you contact your GP/Obs and see what they advise.

It's also known as 5th disease. Our playgroup had a couple of kids get it. One mother was pregnant. She rang her GP straight away and they arranged a BT and then a follow up BT after 6 weeks. She was fine.

My friends son got it while I was pregnant with DS2 & I was also worried. I went & had the blood test & it came back negative. I have Rhesus Incompatability, which basically means I make my babies anaemic while pregnant, and I think this does something similar, so my dr wasn't worried, as I needed weekly ultrasounds anyway.

I would get the blood test just to put your mind at ease.

    Good luck.
