Smile Cot Advice for Big Bub Still in my Bed?!

Hello Bub Hubbers - Can you help? My baby is now nearly four months old and is quite over 11 kilos looking the size of an 18 month old.

He has been sharing my bed but is looking like he would like to start rolling soon. I have a couple of questions for you:

    1) Given he is bigger - are there cots that are suitable in size?
    2) My back is suffering a bit - have you seen high cots on the market, at least that will be similar in height to a bed?
    3) Erm, price/availability... Am located in Melbourne.

Sincere appreciation for any helpful stories or advice on where to start looking.

my son is 8mths old and weighs just under 9kg (the last time I checked anyway) and his cot is fine for him, so it should be suitable for you son. Anyway it is quite high so its good for my back.

I got it from Toys'r'us. It was $300 for the cot or get the cot and changing table when they are on special for the exact same price( and I see them on special quite often) The brand is Bruin and they come in white or light brown. These are good cots, because they also convert to a sofa and toddler bed, so it should last me a while.

They worth every penny in my opinion

most new cots in the shops these days...even cheap ones....have two height levels so you can have them nice and high...

of course when your son gets mobile, you will need to lower and cot and raise the railings so he cant climb out...which will be hard on your back...

im pretty sure kids can stay in cots for quite some time...so dont worry about his weight...other than for your back that is!

I'm pretty sure we had the cot level at high til at least 6 months, probably longer. My ds didn't stand up in the cot til he was 10 months old! And that was fine by me.

I think portacot's sometimes have weight limits, but many proper cots on the market these days convert to a toddler bed or sofa, and are meant to last as a bed for the child til they are 5, so weight will not be a problem for the cot.

The other good news is that hopefully your ds's weight gain should slow down. The first 4 months is a huge weight gain period and then it will slow down. My ds was 11kg at about 10 months I think (maybe earlier), but now at 21 months he's only 13kg and he's been that weight for a few months.

Forgot to add that places to look are Baby Bunting (if you spend over $500 you get a lifelong 5% discount card), Baby Co (inc the factory outlet in Bayswater), ToysRUs (at Knox) and Target - Target often have great discounts on their nursery range and the childcare cots are sold there I think. New cots range in price from $200 (I think) to over $1000 (for the top of the range Boori Cot).

Look for easy to lower side rails on the cot and don't forget that most cots are sold without the mattress - that's a separate purchase (up to $100). The Boori cots are slightly bigger, which means they need different mattresses and different sheet sets.

Thank you for the sensible advice! I will hit the shops for a detailed investigation.

Are there any of you with in love with a particular brand or model under $500?
