    Default Questions for Vegans/Vegetarians

I need to know about people that have a psychological aversion to meat - not those that simply choose to not eat meat for health or belief reasons

My DD has for awhile hated the smell of raw meat - she gag's when we go to the market at the smell in the meat department. Funnily enough I also couldn't stand meat when I was pregnant with DD.

She complains about the smell of meat when we go past a butchers shop and now even in the supermarket.

Recently she's more and more declining to eat meat. She's now at the point of gagging if I cook meat inside, and even starting to gag when chewing meat, and won't even attempt to chew meat is she see's pink meat or even pink juices.

Last night she refused point blank to eat any meat.

Is 4 to young to do this intentionally? (I wouldn't put anything past my DD)

I have no problem organising a separate diet - jeesz after 7 years of wheat free diary free - pfft whats one more hurdle LOL

I guess that might be me.

I feel no moral obligation (well okay it does bother me, but only a little) not to eat meat..

But it disgusts me. Always has.

I had people try to 'trick' me into eating it or telling me something was chicken if it wasn't (as a child sometimes its hard to tell) and then I would feel disgusted and betrayed once I had eaten and they had revealed it.

Chewing meat is yuck.. It feels gross..

Maybe talk to your daughter about it.. my own parents never understood it at all.. So yeah might be worth giving her a chance to talk and some respect (though I'm positive you already do respect her).

I know I went through this growing up. Mum just made sure I had plenty of everything else, you know enough to get all the nutrients etc I needed. I did grow out of it. I would say that she isn't putting it on though, but it probably is just a phase and if its not she will just have to get used to others in the house eating meat while she doesn't have it.

    Sorry not much help really.

    I cannot stand meat!
I do eat it, but mostly because i am being irritating to the rest of the family by not eating it

But walking past the butchers i always have to hold my nose or have something really strong smelling (like mint) to hold over my nose.
Just looking at dads rare steaks makes my stomach churn.

I've never ever been able to handle meat if i could see any blood or anything. i have left meals untouched at a very young age because there was something about the meat which i couldn't handle (ie. visible veins, streaks of blood, pink spots etc). I think its totally normal for someone even at that age to have a problem with it!

I would sit down and ask her why she doesnt like meat. She may, like me have made the connection between animals and meat and be disgusted by it. Give her the chance to have a vegatarian diet and make a few things for the family to try vegetarian too. I have been vegetarian since 7 because of belief reasons, and now my family, husband and daughter are too. Remember lacto ovo vegetarians, those who eat dairy, are the healthiest people in the world. Good Luck

There's no problem about animals = meat - it's a pyschological aversion where she finds the smell and the taste to be abhorent.

BTW - she can't eat dairy - she has Food Protein Induced Colitis.

She also doesn't like the smell or taste of eggs.

Hmmm maybe mushies and mung beans are the way to go

And lentil soup! i could live off lentil soup

Maybe look into some vegetarian/vegan cook books. i own a few, but sometimes the tastes are just too eccentric for me

Would she like tofu? i think its lovely grilled, and i can't tell the difference between it and chicken (except for the lack of blood)

I am so picky when it comes to meat.

Absolutely don't want to see and pink on the meat or juice. Hate the smell of it and the texture is also a big one.

It's more about the texture though, anything to chewing or "gooey" I can't stand, I gag when eating it.(Like chicken for e.g, I only eat dry breast meat and the meat must be as dry as it can be).

Had this problem for years and years.

So yeah I think you can have an aversion to it.

oh gee, well thats a different story, ok. Has she tried vegetarian sausages etc from the sanutarium range? They are packed with soy and super good for you. Otherwise, lentils, my baby lives on them, and hide a bit of tofu in soups etc and freeze them.

Good Luck again you sound like a great mum juggling all these diets!
