I'm just curious what the chances are of conceiving twins.

I have decided I want to have twin boys.

I have twins in my family and DH has twins in his, But when I say that its like distant cuzn's and for him its his dads sisters kids. So we have got it in the family but its not like its my mum or his mum who actually had the twins.

chances are unlikely, even if you dh was a twin himself it wouldn't improve your chances as it is the female who is responsible for twins.

Its nice to have a dream, I hope you get your twin boys, I had always decided that I wanted boys- about 4 or 5 boys! so imagine my surprise when I found out the bub i am carrying is a girl. I never ever imagined I would have a girl (but am used to the idea now).

Lol, I also have a dream of winning lotto, maybe I would have better luck with that...hehe

so basically if my uncle are twins, then i COULD have a chance of having twins?! fingers crossed for the next pregnancy then

I hate to be a downer, but twins increases the risks to both babies, and the mother, so I wouldn't really wish it for someone.

I have a feeling that once you have cared for one newborn, you will really wonder how tricky it would be to look after two at once, especially when the twins would also have an older sister.

Enjoy your little girl, as a lot of people would do anything to have just one baby.

So, it twins run on the girls side does that mean the male has NO influence.
I thought the male determined the sex. But maybe not the multiple.

Ifd my dad is a twin, my DH's nana was a twin and his Mum lost twins...whats with that?

About one in 32 births are twins...

the liklihood of having monozygotic (id) twins is about one in 250...

Unless the twins in your family history are fraternal, it does not matter that there are twins in the family. (genetics will not decide whether one egg is more likely to divide or not, no one really knows why an egg will divide...)

Dizygotic (fraternal) twins are the most common because it happens when a woman releases two eggs and both are fertilised... this can be impacted by family genetics

Every woman has about a 3% chance of natrually conceiving and giving birth to a set of twins.

Monozygotic twins only account for about 0.4% of all births

Higher order multiples are even rarer, with triplets occuring natrually in only about 1 in 8000 births

Factors that Influence Twins
Twins can occur naturally in any woman at any time. However, there are certain factors that increase your chances of having twins. These factors include:

Family History: Having a maternal history of twins or other multiple births increases your chance of becoming pregnant with twins considerably.
Cultural Background: People of African American descent are more likely to have twins or multiple births. People of Asian or Hispanic descent are less likely to have twins.
Age: Your chances of having twins increases as you grow older. Women produce more ovulation-stimulating hormone as they age, increasing your chance of releasing more than one egg during ovulation. The chance of having twins rises to 4% between the ages of 30 and 34, and to 5% between the ages of 35 and 39.
Previous Twins: If you’ve already had twins, it is more likely that you will have another twin pregnancy.
Previous Pregnancies: Women who have had four or more previous pregnancies are the most likely to have twins.
Fertility Drugs: Taking fertility drugs or undergoing fertility treatments can significantly increase your chances of having twins or another type of multiple birth. In some cases, women can increase their chances of having twins up to 20%.
Weight Gain: A study by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology linked the recent rise in multiple births with the steady rise of obesity in North America. Women with a body mass index (BMI) over 30 are more likely to have twins than those in the suggested BMI range of 19 to 25.

two boys, monochorionic (sharing the same placenta, two different sacs), so there is a good chance they are identical.

Seems I may be that one is 250!

Yeah, I read up, because it was such a complete shock to find out we were having twins after never for one moment thinking we would EVER have multiples!
