Support for knees in hard bath

Hi guys,
I had a water birth at Hornsby Hospital last time, and now am going to have another at RNS.
The one complaint I had was how uncomfortable my knees got in the bath.
Can anyone recommend something to take to put under my knees in a birthing bath? A yoga mat or blow up something???

Surely they wouldn't mind if you put a towel there?

The hospital I had DS at had these gel mats that could be used anywhere for that purpose or side of the bath or anything.

The FBC didn't, but they let me use towels instead.

Might be worth discussing?

Same here with the gel mats - maybe you could wear knee pads

What do they suggest at the place you are giving birth??

yep i was going to suggest gel pads or towels too, but its already been suggested

You might want to check with RNSH to see if they do water births - the last i heard, it will depend on who's on as to whether they'll allow a wateerbirth. Not all of their midwives have been accredited for waterbirth.

There are other options you can explore if they will not allow it.

If you go to Clark Rubber, they will cut you two squares of foam, ask for approx 5cm thick x 20cm wide or to your own needs.

Make sure it's not one long piece as that will restrict free movement of your legs. HTH.

I never got around to doing it, and wished i had after my waterbirth with DS, had very sore knee's for a few days!

You could also use an inflatable bath pillow. They have suction caps on the bottom of them so they wont slip in the bath. Dont inflate too high- just enough so your knees aren't hitting the bottom of the bath.
The other suggestions are great too- towels work well or just a couple of terry flat cloth nappies, folded over and placed under your knees.
