Default 7 month old and not sitting

My 7 month old is still not sitting properly and it has me worried. This is my third child, so the attention I give him is not as much as when my other two were his age, but it stills worries me. I was just looking through the photo albums of my other 2 children and they were sitting well by this age. How are other 7 month old babies going?

Our GP sent my son to a specialist when he was 7 months old and he did end up needing physio, BUT he was nowhere near sitting at that age. You said your DS doesn't sit properly. Can you prop him up with pillows without him totally flopping over or sliding down? If so, I'd wait a few months before I worried about it.

My DS1 didn't sit properly till after 9 months.

    I wouldn't worry if he's getting around.

We took DS1 to the physio at 10 months and he was crawling, and pulling himself to standing, but still not sitting properly.

She said not to worry about it.. his back was obviously strong enough, and she's never once yet seen a 3yr old who was a late sitter who can't sit on a chair.

Mine was a late sitter too, cant remember if 7 or 8 months. Then he sat, stood and walked well within 4 months.

My gut feeling is that he spent too much time in his stroller (I walked a LOT) and it didnt encourage him to sit up - he just flopped back.

Here are the World Health Organisation motor development charts - shows a big variation in the norm for sitting up to just over 9 months.

Its hard not to worry sometimes isnt it!

Both of my kids were 9 months before they could sit unsupported.
I wouldn't worry about it yet, he'll get there.

My DD has only finally got the hang of sitting up properly in the last couple of days and she's 8 months in 2 days time.

I think sitting in a high chair has helped and I've just come back from visiting relatives and didn't have a bouncer or anything to sit her in so just sat her on the floor.

It really is hard to not worry. She isn't crawling yet and my Mum says I was crawling at 6 months.

My near 8 mth old isn't really sitting either, but she's crawling furiously and into everything (including the cat's breakfast this morning) so I'm not really concerned. she is my 4th child and they have all done different things at different times so I try not to compare.
As someone else said, their 8 mth old isn't crawling. They just reach their individual milestones in their own time

In the babylove book there is a huge range in the normal age babies sit up. My ds was a late sitter at about 8 months. I got the third degree from everyone. I think I should have propped his pram up more when out and about, but he loved to sleep lying down in it so I let him! I would keep encouraging him by putting toys at eye level. I know everyone says it, but he will do it when ready. If worried ask CHN if you have one that you like
