Has anyone actually had their waters broken by an OB and then gone into labour without the need to be induced in any other way?
Specifically mums who are overdue.

I want to know this too! And how long can/should you demand to be left alone before they come at you with the drip?
This doesn't answer your question, but my first baby I was given the prostaglandin gel the night before and everything happened naturally after that, so it was a great success in the end! But second time I think they just break your waters :/

Sorry, I wasn't overdue at 39+4, so disregard my post if it's not relevant.
I had a partial rupture, then only mild, irregular contractions. I allowed my OB to perform an ARM and within half an hour, was having contractions every minute, with a minute break in between. No drip. It was a quick 1st labour, at 6.5 hours, but it was very intense from the beginning - it was like being in transition for the last 4 or so hours. For me, it was exactly like what other women describe induced labours being like.
I believe I would have gone into labour anyway, without the ARM, and the build up may have been more gradual if the membranes had of broken naturally during labour.
I was 5 days overdue and went in for an induction. Had the gel and then the next morning my waters were broken. Contractions started almost immediately.
I did have the drip when I got my epidural 7 hours later, because I'd only dilated 1cm in that time. Funny thing was that even after the drip I didn't dilate any more for the next 2 hours...
Anyway, I don't think that I would've had the drip if things were progressing.
Good luck - hope it happens for you soon!!!

Yes I did. I was 10 days overdue with my 2nd baby and 5 days with my 3rd. Both times I had my waters broken in the hospital by my ob and then went into labour, I didn't have to have the gel or drip.
My 1st baby was born on her due date (very considerate of her!) so I was surprised when I was still waiting 10 days over with our 2nd. My ob recommended having an induction (bub was engaged) and I went in to the hospital at 9am, he broke my waters at 9.30 and suggested I walk around the corridors to try and help get things moving. He said if nothing was happening by lunch time he'd come back to administer the drip. But within 1/2 hour I was getting regular contractions and an hour later had a strong urge to push. The midwife rang the dr and he was very surprised to hear I was needing to push. Our little girl was born at 11.55am, less than 3 hours after my waters had broken.
The 2nd time round and I was 5 days over & again the baby's head was engaged - had been for 10 days and my ob offerred to break my waters and we agreed. She felt that as the previous birth had happened quite quickly I would get the same result again. This time my waters were broken at 8.30am and our baby girl arrived 2 hours later again without the need for any other intervention.
I didn't find the contractions any more painful during the labour than when I had my first baby. The only difference is that with my first I was getting mild contractions for about 8 hours before they started to get intense and feel like something was actually going to happen. With the 2nd & 3rd the contractions were quite intense from the start - still bearable though and I apart from the gas I didn't use any other pain relief.
Goodluck!!

...me!!!
I was induced 1 week over with dd2. I had my waters broke at almost 8am and half an hour later the contractions started (just mild). Then I hit transition probably about 11.30-12 and she was born at 1.55pm.
My experience was very similar to nevjay...no need for gel, drips etc. But I was told that if I didn't go into labour by lunchtime, then the OB would administer the drip. But there was no need.
Labour was no worse with dd1, just shorter and I preferred to labour at home than in the hospital. The only type of pain relief that I had was the gas.

me too!
I had my waters broken with DS2, DS3 and DD, and went into labour by myself after each!
DS2 was born in a little over 4 hours after my waters were broken.
DS3's labour was a little longer to start...3 hours after my waters were broken, labour began, then I gave birth under 4 hours later.
With DD, contractions had already started, however they were very irregular. Ob broken my waters at 9.45am, and DD was born at 1.02pm!!
had no problems at all!

Oh it's so nice to read so many positive stories.
I had a bit of a scare today I hadn't felt any movement for a while and went into hospital to have a CTG scan....all is fine.
I see my OB tomorrow. I know he will want to break my waters on Tuesday and truthfully after today being sooooo stressfull and having weighted up all the pros and cons I have decided to go ahead with having my waters broken.
I hope I am one of those women that will just progress naturally into labour after my waters are broken....I really don't want any other intervention and only pain relief I want is the gas.![]()
