Default Is it cruel to let the puppy sleep outside

l was just wondering what everyone else thinks about letting a 12 week old pup sleep outside. She is a border collie and eventually we want her to sleep outside. We have had her for 4 weeks and so far shes sleeps well during the night in the laundry only problem is l am sick of the smell of dog in the laundry and cleaning up after her. We leave paper down put she tends to do her business right near the door. During the day shes great and stays outside. We live in melbourne and its very cold and wet especially at night. Is it cruel to leave her out. There is a kennel out there.

Puppies I'd generally keep inside until the warmer months. Mind you we have a silky and she ended up sleeping in our bed so I'm not a good one for advice because we went completely against it

I think it is too cold, but Im a sook, both mine are sleeping on there beds down stairs ( rumpus room)

with their winter coats on, with a hot water bottle under the blankets on their beds, which DH will change and make them hot again when he gets up to go to work at 3.30 am.

So ours are spoilt, but In summer they sleep on the back deck on there beds, but Summer or not I didnt let either of them sleep outside until they were about nearly 5-6months.

But as I said, Im a sook.

Our border collie sleeps outside, but she's six years old. When she was a puppy, she slept in our kitchen. I'd probably wait until she was a little older before putting her outside - unless you have another dog she can cuddle up for company.

i wouldnt its just a pup.. maybe when its little older and its warmer

as for cleaning up..atleast pup goes in the right place.. and also in buying a pup/dog there is always going to be some degree of cleaning up after them.. even in the backyard you have to do the poop scoop.

Is there a garage or shed you could put her in if you don't want her in the laundry?

It has been really cold lately especially at night and we bring our dogs inside (garage) because the chill can affect their joints and bones (one of our dogs has arthritis)

When our dogs were puppies we had them in the laundry - eventually as they got older they moved outside but for now with the cold it's probably best to have the puppy inside - they aren't young for long!

All the farms dogs in the world must hate 'city pups'

Maybe when the weather warms up a bit. A kennel is fine with some easy wash bedding and if it is kept out of the direction of the wind. Our dogs (when I was a kid) always had a kennel on a back porch, and we used to heat a brick by the fire and wrap it in a bag and put it in the kennel. I think this came from my Dad's childhood. He was a foster kid and this was all they had to keep warm in the country.

Course they can bark their heads off at every noise when outside.

I grew up on a dairy, and we have always done this with our dogs, even working ones

We must be a family of sooks.
