Default Want to make white frosting. Can anyone help?

    Hi everyone,
I would like to make white frosting like you get on professional b'day cakes. I've found a recipe and it calls for shortening. Does anyone know what that is and where I can get it?

Do you mean the Almond icing? It is the perfectly flat white icing like on Wedding cakes etc....if so you can buy it at the supermarket ready to roll or colour

Thanks for you replies but what I'm after is pure white frosting, I've made butter frosting but it isn't white because of the butter. I don't want to use the ready roll icing because I want the soft texture and yes I love the betty crocker frosting as well but again that isn't pure white. Mum said you used to be able to buy white butter but I can't seem to find it anywhere
Thank you again for your replies

    Hi 3Princesses,
You can get shortening in the fridge section of the supermarket. They will usually have a wrapped block of plain shortening. but Copha-like you use in crackles etc is shortening. It is used in desserts alot as it is white not yellow like butter and it acts as a binding or thickening agentperfect for frosting as it holds its "form".
Hope this helps- I had to use it when i made my a cinderella cake for my cousins little girl

    Thanks for that.
Did the copher make the frosting have a funny taste or leave a weird feeling in your mouth? I've been told that this could happen.

I guess I can just give it a go and see what happens.

I found that it did have a little bit of a different taste and left almost a "coating " in your mouth if you use it too thick! adding a drop or two of vanilla essence will help a bit though.
The better quality the shortening is the better it will taste but most places only stock one or two brands.
Is there a bakery supply shop near you -they might have the better quality stuff?
I know some of the cake shops in town here actually sell cake supplies and decorations etc, i think they will evn order stuff that you need. Maybe see if there is a cake shop or bakery near you that does this?

Also i found that i didn't need as much shortening as the recipe said-i just added it bit by bit until it was the right consistancy to work with.

    goodluck with it

I think ideally you would need shortening... not sure if this helps but Crisco is pretty good http://www.usafoods.com.au/search.php . Copha does turn things a bit waxy...

Not sure if you have thought about buying marzapan as an icing???

both copha and crisco are a vegetable shortening but crisco is one of the better quality ones for baking ect although unfortunately i found that no one here stocked it!

Idealy a soft/softer shortening is what would work best for frosting (whereas copha is solid) it just depends on what your local places stock.
