Default Help!! Strange behaviour..is it colic

    Hi everyone

They are probably threads already similar to this one, but I am so tired that I cant really be bother reading them, so please excuse me if I am asking a question that already has been asked.

By lovely little placid boy, has had a tough week, and even a tougher day. Travis has had a cold for a couple of days, but is getting better. He hasnt done a poo since tuesday so I am worried he is constipated. He is now fully bottlefeed, it has been a couple of days since his last breastfeed. Thats a little bit of history, now with the main concern: today he woke up for his lunch feed, but was very upset, wouldnt take the bottle would take maybe do one suck and cry, wouldnt calm down with the dummy either, he did eventually calm down probably after 1/2 hour and had a proper feed maybe 2 hours later. Now during that really restless time, my gut instinct was that he was in pain, I thought it was either teeth I know he is young but his gums are a swollen and he has just started dribbling, or constipation. Anyway during that time, he did do a couple of big burps which seem to help. Now after he had his feed we had a 2 -3 hour sleep, then he woke up extremely upset, again my gut instinct was pain, I gave him a bath he generally loves them but he just cried and cried, I rang a friend (a fellow bub hubber) whos little girl has had problems with constipation, anyway I was thinking of taking him to the hospital but I was going to drop Aden off at her place first. Just before we left home, Travis did the biggest burp, and by the time we got there he was settled. Now most of the time I didnt think it was wind/colic because it didnt feel like it, he has had it before so did Aden, they would both pull them selves up into little balls then stretch out then ball again. But this just didnt feel like colic.

Sorry to ramble on I hope this makes sense and if you got this far you have done well. Travis is normally a few quiet baby, but today is so out of character for him. Does anyone have any ideas??

    Hello!
Oh you poor poor thing! I'm thinking it could be constipation or a combination of both. Just think, if he is eating and nothing is coming out the other end, he would be getting a sore belly or something! Try a teaspoon of brown sugar in his next bottle (once a day limit), and also try Infants Friend and/or Gripe Water. These are great!

Give them a go and see how he goes...the poor little man!

My guess would be constipation.. I only say this because he has just changed to formula.. apparently when going to formula, or changing formula, can cause constipation..

Infant's friend is a good product and I have heard the sugar things works well too...

    Good luck

    Thankyou Ladies

I am going to try the sugar formula this morning, and I will change formula once again. It was really wierd yesterday, how he seem to settle after a enormous burp, but wasnt acting like a baby with wind. I am hoping to get into the doctors today or tomorrow for his cold still hasnt clear up and his cough seems to be getting worse.

Thanks for the advice and well wishes things work out soon.

The 2 main reasons for constipation in humans - whether infant, or adult - are dehydration or lack of essential nutrient oils in the system.

So the best solutions for constipation are increasing fluid intake and maintaining it (preferably as clean filtered or spring water), and increasing dietary oils (such as omega 3 & 6).

That's why I'd recommend gripe water and some extra water until the problem passes (sorry for my choice of words ). Most other methods aren't gentle enough for infants' digestive systems. If the problem persists then maybe look at some of the more extreme (and less gentle) forms of relief, such as sugar water.

    Good luck!!

Well I just got back from the doctors, and the short version is: he is not constipated, his tummy his nice and soft, most likely not pooing because of the cold and not getting enough milk. And yestersdays episodes was more likely wind.

Thankyou everyone for your replies , it is always stressfull when you dont know what is wrong with babies - why dont they come with a manual!
