Well my middie is about $4000 -$4500 (depending on who i choose) and im estimating by the time i get my pool, drop sheets, hose, towels, scoop, bowl, oxygen and stuff for the birthing room eg candels, music ect it will be about another $500. so all up around $4500 - $5000.

My midwife is $4K total. I will have to get some old towels and sheets etc as well so I'm guessing it'll be close to $4200 in the end. She provides a birth pool as well (if you wish to use one).

I have private health insurance too which will pay out for up to $1500 per financial year. $1k of that is for confinement and delivery and the other $500 is for pre-natal visits. Because I'm pregnant over two financial years then I can claim the pre-natal visit component twice so should be able to claim up to $2K. I can also claim up to $120/financial year for birth education classes. I'm with Defence health but I believe that Australian Unity offer something similar.

I've chosen to not to bother with the vit k so I cant answer that question sorry

My midwife is charging me $3500 which includes the birth pool.

If you choose Vitamin K, you will have to get a prescription from a GP. Some will be fine about this, others not so fine - they often let their own uninformed biases affect their behaviour, IMO.

It makes sense to find support from other homebirthing mothers in your area. There are a few HB support groups around and others there may be able to point you in the direction of HB Friendly GPs etc.

    Hi
I have been in the process of finding a homebirthing midwife recently, the cost of all services and visits, including a birthpool if I choose is $2500 for the midwife I chose.

All up this birth will cost me $2000.
I have a very thorough and dedicated midwife who does all my ante and post natal checks and will even make me a homeopathic mother tincture out of my babies placenta.

I haven't had to buy a pool (supplied by my middy) or pay for any scans/tests because the very few tests/scans I did have I have gone through the public hospital because I refuse to pay for silly things like a DVD of photos. I just wanted the basic check, not the frills.

Ummmm, we will end spending a little bit to set up the birth room, we are using our garage so I am buying a couple of oil heaters, some candles, oils, a couple of hot water bottles....oh and we spent $25 on carpet yesterday to carpet our garage. So just small incidentals.

    Thats it

With the Vit K, you just get a prescription from your GP, I cannot imagine any GP refusing to give this prescription because in general they would like everyone to have it along with the Hep B etc.

My midwife will not administer the Hep B or Vit K injections, she will do Vit K orally though.
