I bought a Cadbury cake mix while I was on holiday recently, and I would describe it as "utterly forgettable", but I like to cook my own things from scratch.

Black forest cake needs a rich chocolate cake (but not a mud cake) in layers. You brush the layers with Kirsch (cherry liqueur), then fill the layers with drained canned cherries and cream - use John West Dark Cherries. Cover the cake with cream and grated chocolate, decorate the top with chocolate and cherries.

At a pinch, you can buy a pre-made chocolate cake cut into layers at a continental deli. They come in a packet, are made in Germany, and are quite nice. All you need to do then is fill it.

    it really isnt that hard...

if you did want to cheat, i would suggest buying one or two (depending on how tall/thick they are) and using those for your layers, and putting on your own cream and cherries.
