Default Newborn (6weeks) cries during feeding, why???

My 6 week old boy has been very unsettled since he was born (day 3) and did not have any awake periods without crying until week 4. He is still grumpy a lot of the time and gets very upset when I feed him. He screws up his face, cries, fights my breast and often won't latch back on during feeds (often after 2-5 minutes). I have tried different positions, expressing for a minute or so prior to the feed, burping him, changing breasts, singing to him etc.. I thought maybe he is in pain (he often has wind) or perhaps reflux however he only does this during the day as during night feeds when he is sleepy he feeds fine. I'm not so sure about reflux either as when he is hysterical I put him on the change table and he is then happy. I have eliminated dairy, wheat and soy from my diet but have not seen any improvement. I have also been seeing a chiropractor and various midwifes. Anyone have any suggestions? It is driving me crazy...

I had this prob with ds1, i atually didnt leave hospy till he was not screaming during feeds. I actually had an attachment prob even though i thought he was on properly he actually wasnt he lost a lot of weight the first few days he was so sleepy and just cumfort sucking that i thought he was on prop. We went through the same things when trying to feed it was horrible i ended up trying a nipple sheild it was my last resort cause i didnt want to ff, and it worked he could latch on and away he went never looked back now a healthy almost 3 yr old.
They usualy wear themselves out so much during the day thats why he would be fine at night.
So maybe give it ago and see what happens. I strongly suggest you do cause it sounds like what you are going through is the same as what i did.

I would personally recommend seeing a Lactation Consultant. I saw one when DD was ony a few weeks old as she had trouble attaching and feeding properly. It turned out I have slightly flat nipples and a shield was required for a few weeks just so that she could get the hang of it.

LC's are amazingly helpful and most councils have a Lactation Day Stay unit that is free of charge. Ask your midwives at the hospital about it and they will give you the contact details.

    Good luck,

Thanks for the advice. I have seen a lactation consultant, chiro and a couple of midwifes. The lactation consultant said the attachment was good and that he is a very efficient sucker. I just called the ABA and they suggested that maybe my flow is too fast or he is getting too much lactose so to get him to stimulate my letdown, spray letdown onto cloth and then feed him after letdown finishes. She said that the build up of lactose may be fermenting in his tummy and giving him wind etc.. and maybe that is why the feeding is worse after lunch time and into evening.
If this fails then perhaps I will try the nipple shield, though is the nipple shield just for flat nipples? Mine are erect when stimulated..

No it i also used for sore nipple, i used one for a little while with ds1 and ds2, ds2 is 3 mnths and we are using it on and off, my nipple arent flat either they are erect normal. I think my attach prob was cause i had big boobs and when my milk came in they were huge and it was hard for him get a good grip the sheild just made it easier.
