Moving 15 1/2 month olds from cot to single bed?

My boys are 15 1/2 months old.

Today, I walked in their room and found one of them in the others cot. Which means they are climbing out of their cots.

We have two single beds (which we have to cut down from bunks). I can cut the legs shorter than normal single beds would it be ok to do that?

Now, the way they go to sleep is by self settling. They usually play/talk/whinge until they go to sleep. We never go in the room or else they fire back up and it takes even longer to go back to sleep. They sleep with their door shut.

I know I need rails etc too.

But - how the hell am i going to try and keep them on the bed? They never just lie there and sleep in their cots, all the balnkets end up out of the cots and then end up sleeping on their tummies with their legs under their bum.

Help!!!

They will work it out. The first few nights can be a bit up and down, but they will soon adjust to the new setting. I put my DS in a bed when he was about 18mths, and he only took a night or two to adjust.

I'd keep the sleep routine as similar as possible to how you have it now. Its your choice whether to have rails or not too, some people just put an old mattress or some pillows on the floor, so if they fall, they have a soft landing. They do learn pretty quickly about not rolling over too much!

All you can do is give it a go...and if you have any dramas, worry about it then!

If its not really dangerous them climbing out, If you want to get them out of their cots, you could always just forget the beds at the moment. Just put 2 single bed mattresses on the floor and see how they go for a couple of days.

Keep doing what you are doing. Just shut the door and don't go back in. When you check on them later, they may be asleep anywhere in the room, just pick them up and put them on their mattresses. They will soon get the hang of things.

My DD1 used to sleep in the most feral positions. She would move all her pillows in the floor and sleep there. That is why DD2 when she goes into a bed will be on a mattress on the floor for a couple of months first to get her used to it. DD1 used to always end up on the floor.

They'll be fine.

If you get rails, they'll be okay

. We tried it without rails, and they just kept waking up coz they'd fall out... and having them both awake at 2 am is not something we were happy with... once we got the rails, they were fine.

Mine sleep in weird positions too.. still do.

The thing which will be hardest is they'll keep getting up for ages to start with.

We just had to sit in the room, or in the doorway and just kept putting them back into bed (you'll need both you and DH to do it though... otherwise they'll go under your arm as you've got one)

Then they knew that they had to stay on their beds.

My DH reckons it will simply not work. He is refusing to put them in big beds.

I said last night until the hurt themselves he wont do anything....argfffffffffff.

I really think maybe the best way would be to seperate them in different rooms for now? We have a spare room so its just a matter of getting it ready.

What if you left them in the room together and took one side of each of their cots so that they can get out by not climbing over. It might be a good transition into a bed.

You might find they might even start sleeping next to each other in the same bed.
