Usually it will take 10 working days to process your passport, then it is couriered to you.
It costs $100 and lasts for 5 years.

Just some of my tips (as I've just recently applied for my DDs passports - won't bore you with the dramas I had).
    1. Start the process well ahead of time ie 3 mths before your travel
    2. It can be a bit tricky to get a spirited toddler to sit still for photos. As long as they are looking straight on, not smiling and you crop your own photo to the specs on the passport application form you can use a picture that is up to 6mths old. Took a few turns to get one of my DD1 (2.5yo) I found for my baby it was easy, we put her on a blanket and took the picture from above and they turned out perfect.
    3. When filling in the form, ensure there are no errors. It is not acceptable to put a cross through and initial it, if you do, you will need to fill in a new form (the same goes for the section the guarantor fills in). To prevent this happening, we filled in the complete form
and wrote on the back of the photos so the guarantor only had to sign everything.
    4. You will need to make an interview appt at the post office (check the website to see which post office near you does the passport interviews)- but the children do not need to attend the interview itself. When you go, ensure the form if fully complete and you have all the documents required, including photocopies of everything.

Good luck and enjoy your upcoming trip!!

Thanks for the info - we have to get passports for the kids as well. I'm not happy that they have to have separate passports. It's just one more way for the government to try and make money and it's one more passport to try not to lose.
