Default When do they start holding crayons / drawing?

Just wondering if anyone knows when kids normally start holding crayons to draw etc.

I know it sounds silly but I gave my almost 11 month old girl a texta today to draw on a whiteboard marker supervised and she was intrigued but in no way ready to do it on her own!

At what age are kids doing this comfortably...is it like 18 months+?

No idea, but developmentally I have read to introduce large crayons and butchers paper at 9 months (can't remember which book I read it in, maybe Penelope Leach??).

I haven't done it yet. My DS wouldn't sit down long enough to do it anyway and even if he did he'd just eat the crayons and rip the paper . I may try in the next few weeks.

My DS is 13 months, and is interested and will scribble, but not for long periods of time.

My DD used to eat crayons and felt pens up until she was 2 - drove me nuts, and I had to supervise her all the time

I started both mine arouind 12 months, ,maybe a bit younger with ds1 as he didn't really put stuff in his mouth - he took to it straight away. DS2 is now 17 months and has been scribbling for a bout teh last month, prior to taht he was more interested in eating the crayons adn putting them in and out of th ecup I had them in.

DD wanted to draw from when she was about 11 months, she got better and better over time, now at 23 months she draws pictures of things (well she knows what they are!!).. The more they do it the better they get, like anything really.

DD did her first scribble at about 12 months I think. She was never really one of those put-everything-in-your-mouth type babies.

She is 2 now and still just scribbles. No identifiable drawings yet!

ds will scribble but only for about 1 minute, he is getting more and more into it though (i started him with big crayons and chalk when he was about 11 months, he is 14 months now). Apart from that he tries to eat the crayons and rips the paper

Wow thanks ladies for your responses. I thought it was weird of me to encourage drawing this early but obviously not! I think I will add that to her first birthday pressie list DH gets lots of plotting paper from his engineering place at work so hoping to use that too
