Cough, Cough, Cough

Can anyone recommend a natural remedy for my 8 month old.
He has a cold with a COUGH, can I not underestimate the cough enough, I was up for 3 hours with him last night because he was really restless with this stupid cough. It's not croup the Dr thinks its more like a dry throat that you get with a cold or could be mucous running down the back irritating his throat when he is lying down.
I have tried the eucalyptus in boiling water in a bowl in his room but this clears his nose and irritates his cough so I ditched that.
Half the time he is coughing in his sleep but then eventually wakes and can't go back because of it not to mention keeps me and DH awake all night.
I feel so sorry for my poor cherub

Any suggestions, please help.

Maybe just some warm water in bottle might help. Although if it is mucous running down his throat you need something to help dry it up so it doesn't run into his chest and cause a chest infection.

maybe try propping one end of his cot up

eta- I find a vaporizer works wonders when my boys have chesty coughs. Or steaming up the bathroom and letting them breathe that in for a while.

Thanx girls so far, I have tried all of the above except for the honey and lemon because I thought babies couldn't have honey until 18 months or something.
Keep the ideas coming thoug i'm sure someone out there has a great one that works.

Definitely the vaporiser. I have heard diluted, cooled camomile tea works to soothe the throat and keep fluids up but have never tried it. Not sure if there are any contraindications for it so would check first.
