Sydney shopping centre evacuated after fire

Hundreds of people were quickly evacuated from the shopping centre. A fire has forced the evacuation of the Broadway Shopping Centre in Sydney this afternoon.

The New South Wales Fire Brigade says an electrical substation is believed to have exploded inside the shopping centre.

Hundreds of people were quickly evacuated from the centre, although several were later rescued from lifts.

No injuries have been reported at this stage.

A Fire Brigade spokesman says all power to the shopping centre is being cut for safety reasons as firefighters go in to investigate.

Crews are continuing work to cool down components of the substation which exploded.

Fire Brigade Superintendent Craig Brierley says the fire was quickly put out, but it heated up oil in the transformer to dangerous temperatures.

"We can hear it bubbling. It's a matter now of slowly cooling it down until it's safe," he said.

There will be no access to the car park until the transformer has cooled down.
