Question Thailand with 18mnth old- give me advice!!!

Hey....We are going to Thailand (phuket) in April- DH myself and DS who will be 18mnths.

If anyone else has done this I would love some helpful hints on what to expect. (food, activities, locals, time difference, what to take etc etc)

DS has been on several flights within Aust so not too stressed bout the flight, but more nervous bout the whole other country thing!

Oh and I am trying to avoid taking a pram, is this madness? I have a mai tei babycarrier and will have a "leash" backpack thingy for him too.

    THanks in advance!

we haven't traveled but hope to in the future. The thing that I would be most concerned about is disease, so having necessary needles, drinking bottled water etc. Sorry I'm not much help, that's just the first thing that would come to mind.

We are off to Fiji Tuesday with our 20 month old, i would definately be taking a small stroller as i know how active my boy was at 18 months, we have a Quicksmart which folds into a backpack. Also the dr told us to take lots of creams and antihistamine if he gets bitten, or allergy rash etc.

You just never know. Have fun!

Ooh that quicksmart sounds good, is it expensive?

I went to Phuket years ago (maybe 15) but I didn't have kids and I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. I do remember lots of snakes and really scary drivers. And watch out for those beach side massages - I'm still seeing a chiropractor after a lady stood on my back, grinded my hip into the ground and pulled my leg in an upwards yanking motion.

Do you know anything about malaria prevention? We're off to Bali this year and I haven't looked into that yet but the last time I had it it was only in tablet form. I'm hoping there's a shot now for the kids - much easier than tablets.

We weren't going to take a pram either but I might check out the quicksmart too.

Sorry I've got no advice, I just highjacked your thread to get info for myself.

    Hi
Just though I'd try to help, although I've never been to Thailand. I did go to Bali with my 9 month old baby (and going back in 32 days with both my boys)
I believe that malaira (sp) tablets are no longer necessary unless your travel to places like Africa, if you are advised to take them please be very careful as they generally make you get sunburnt alot faster.

That said I would suggest you pack sunscreen for your little one, insect repelant, stingoes, antihistamine, baby panadol, etc.
I would also suggest you take some prepackaged baby food & cereals and snacks just in case the food is a little too rich for his tummy.

I will also be packing some milton sterilising tablets, disposible bibs & change mats, take & toss containers & drink bottles - no harm done if they're lost or forgotten.

I'm not too sure what the streets and roads are like in Phuket but for Bali I purchased a Roger Armstrong Elfin, its got good size wheels for paths and roads. But most importantly it has better sun protection than the quicksmart and bubs can sleep comfortably in it as it lays back. I was also allowed to use it all the way through the airport until boarding because it is so compact (which helped when the flight home was as 1am, Nathan slept the whole time) You can get the Elfin on ebay (most seem to sell for around $90) or babybunting for around $150 new. I now have two so both boys can use one while we are away.

I also found that using the baby sling (baby bjorn) we both got too hot and I felt my little man was too exposed to the heat & sun. Please keep in mind that the heat can really affect the little ones so walking may be too much for them.

It really depends what yor travel budget is, I would also suggest buying a portable booster seat as you cant always guarantee there will be high chairs available.
I have also brought a kinderkot, its a portacot that weight approx 3kg, pops up by itself looks like a little one man tent, but has insect and sunprotection so it can be used for indoors and out.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to help you with as much info as I've got. If I can help with anything else please let me know.
    Karen
