Default I forgot to ask the doctor...

My little man is on DIMETAPP - due to a snotty nose and a cough...

he has been on it since Thursday afternoon... getting a dose usually three times a day... should I keep giving it to him??? we dont see the dr again till tuesday?? is that too long to be on an antihistamine?? I'd definately dose him at night (to help him sleep) - should I stop the day time dose??

could I give him panadol during the day and dimetapp at night - or shouldn't they be combined- gee soo many questions!!!

I meant to ask the dr... and forgot - and now it is sunday and I have no chance to even phone?!!?

    thanks

Panadol and Dimetapp can be safely combined....

I would just be dosing him with the dimetapp at night and using Fess nasal drops to help clear it during the day...Also Vicks Baby Balsam is good too...Put a pillow under the mattress to help drain his nose and if you have a vapouriser, also a good idea...

Not that I have any monetary interest in these products, but they do help

Dimetapp and Panadol can b given at the same time, cause there different things - I always just ring the pharmacist with any questions like this they are usually fantastic and there is always a pharmacy open some-where
Panadol is for temp and pain, Dimetapp is for runny noses etc - u could try painstop which is fantastic as well - but talk to the pharmacist

I would be dropping the amount of Dimetapp, then if he got worse again I would probably up to 3 times a day again! As K.M. said you can still give him panadol as well!

    Ditto to the other posts

Just thought Id add my doctor always told me Dimetap and all those type of meds arent the best as they usually clear up the nose but once you stop using them the nose becomes runny again, sometimes worse than before.

Whenever I did use it (maybe once or twice) this happened to me, O's nose would clear up only to come back within a day of stopping the meds, worse than before.

Just wondering if any one else had this happen to their child?

Jenny, hope your little bub feels better soon

Dimetapp isn't actually going to dry up the nose completely. It helps to unblock the nose due to allergies, colds etc, but it isn't going to cure them.
Also some antihistamines have a rebound effect, meaning if you use them for longer than 3 days, they can have the reverse effect of what you want them for IYKWIM

I only give dd dimetab at night to help her sleep. Not saying it puts her to sleep but it drys up her running nose enough to allow her to sleep.

The best course of action is keep getting them to blow their nose through out the day and get it out of their system. Easier said than done we very little

My doctor also says the same about dimetab too much can create the opposite effect.

Panadol I use when she has temperatures or a sore head (as she tells me )

    Goodluck

Oh if you buy the Fess Nose drops it comes with a nasal pump kinda thing that sucks all the ickky yucky stuff out of their nose! I can't remember what it is called though!
