    Default New in ACT

Hi everyone, I have just relocated to Canberra (hometown is Hobart but just came from 2yrs in Wellington) I have Maddie- 18mths and Mitchell 4mths. I'm looking for coffee groups/playgroups kids music groups etc which we could sign up for. We are in the Belconnen area- currently living in a Hotel (!) until we find a place so Maddie is climbing up the walls!! Any ideas for activities would be welcomed!

    Many thanks

    Hi Belsie
Welcome to Canberra, I live Southside with my two kiddies, there are ACT meet-ups occasionally..
...also you may be interested in a thread a while back on kids activities in Canberra >click here<
I hope you enjoy it here and I'm sure other bubhub mummies (who are all very friendly) will have some useful suggestions too!

    Hi and welcome to Canberra.
i have a DD Alice who is 17months old and another on the way.
we often have meet ups and once the weather warms up a bit we will have to head outdoors a bit and let the kids run wild.

Hi Belsie and welcome to Canberra

I live in Dunlop, so I'm northside too. There's not enough of us northsiders on bubhub as far as I'm concerned All you southies need to relocate

I know that a number of the large churches on the northside run free playgroups. I have been meaning to get along to check a couple of them out now that I have a car, but we've been sick the last couple of weeks.

Belconnen Baptist has Busy Bees Playtime for kids 0 - 5. From their website: This energetic group provides a friendly, accepting and relaxing environment, where parents can learn to help and encourage each other in their parenting roles, and where children are introduced to positive social interaction through large and small group play. Playgroup meets on Monday and Tuesday mornings 9.30am – 11.30am

My little boy has swimming lessons in Gold Creek with Aqua Tots, and I know that they also have a gym tots program, kind of like gymboree I guess, with songs and activities, but I'm not sure, I've never been.

We are going to try and get together now that the weather is warming up and the sun is out (well meant to be anyway ). Hopefully we can work it so we have a meet on the southside and then a meet on the northside, or something like that.

I'm sure there's plenty of other activities, I'll have a think and come back later if I think of anything!

Welcome to Canberra - I also lived in a hotel for the first few months back here and so you have my sympathy!!

In addition to the activities people have listed in the thread that redMaple gave you the link to, you can also check out gymberoo, Kidstart at Gold Creek which offers toddler activity classes, and the paint and play sessions in Ainslie appear to be going very well with lots of people attending them - and they are free. (THey are in the linked thread). A great place to take kids for some safe and fun activity is Questacon - the National Science centre - they have an area put aside called Mini Q which is for the under 6's - my 11 month old has as much fun as the 3 and 4 year olds. We bought an annual family pass and when we were in the hotel and needed a change of scenery it was a godsend.

Wow! Thanks everyone, there are some great ideas. I've often found it's the little advertised things, more the word-of- mouth, or advertised on bulletin board which are the most fun! So I appreciate everyone's advice and welcome! Draught- I like the Questacon idea- I think annual passes for there and the Zoo may be in order...

Isacc's mummy- We are looking for a place in Dunlop- seems to be our preferred suburb from what we have investigated. I'll let you know if we end up out there!

Appreciate ideas- more welcome! Particularly music groups, ones in church halls or community centers? Where you bring $2 and a piece of fruit etc... bash about on a tambourine and sing kids songs? lol

    thanks muchly!
