Default 9 week old wont take drops!!

My 9 week old daughter has oral thrush and i have it on my nipples too. We have been told by the chemist to give her Nilstat drops but the poor little thing just gags, spits it out, cries and nearly vomits! I know its for her own good but if she's just spitting it out im not sure its going to be very effective!! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions of another way of treating oral thrush? Thanx..

If you have a bottle handy you could try mixing the drops with a little water and see if she will drink it from the bottle

Theres a cream you can also get from the chemist. You can put it on your nipples and also in your bubs mouth but I cant remember what its called.

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind, its no fun but .... if she has to have it. I have seen doctors administer drops and they hold the little ones chin up and force them to swallow... I think they even held my DS nose so he HAD to swallow and when they are crying its easier I think. Poor little thing.
Unsure if their are any other treatments for this, I dont know anything about it.
    Good luck!

Thanx for ur replies, i just had to give them to her again and i found that if i just give a little at a time it seems to drizzle down a bit better than giving it all at once. It still makes her cry tho and not very nice but like u said brookeme, u have to be cruel to be kind..

hi there, i used nilstat, as recommended by the chemist, but my childhood nurse said to use Daktarin gel.Nilsat took over a week to even make a dent in my daughters thrush, but when i used daktarin, it was noticably better the next day, and it's a thick paste, so it kind of just sticks in their mouth and doesn't get washed away so quick(maybe that's why it worked better).Anyway, that's what worked for us.Small tube should be about $11 from memory!

Thats what its called, Daktarin Gel.

I thought with the Nilstat that it had to hit the sides of their mouths and not go straight down?

Our Doctor said to put it on a gauze pad and quickly wipe the inside of DD's mouth where the thrush was. You could try that.

I was given Daktarin Oral Gel for my nipples and told to only use the Nilstat drops for bubs because shes under 6 months old... missmaisy, can i ask how old ur bub was when u used it coz it seems as tho it would be more effective, i just dont want to harm her.....

oh , i was never told there was an age restriction.Bub was definately under 6 months, from memory around 7 or 8 weeks. My son also had it when he was a tiny bub, and basically the same thing happened, nilstat first , then found Daktarin.I was told by the chemist with Hannah (no 3) that nilstat was best and they must have caught me on a day that was not willing to trust my own judgement -as i bought that instead!Maybe you could do a quick search on the net, and if that doesn't give any answers, you could probably get the companies ph no to ring and ask someone?I know my kids were definately under 6 months though and we had no further dramas, but best to be sure i suppose.Jacki
