Skipping

When did your child learn to skip? My dd who is 5 still can't skip and she needs to for ballet. She kind of step hops rather than skips properly. All the other little girls can skip in her ballet class except for dd.

Is there anyway to teach skipping or do they just have to get it in their own time

My uncoordinated one started skipping about age 6... my 4 year old still does the hop-step still hehe

If you're really wanting your little DD to skip properly - I was shown (when younger for the same reason) to jump on the spot to music.... Then introduce the skipping rope... If she can do it on the spot (this takes time and patience... ha ha) then she could probably work on it from there.... I wasn't the most co-ordinated, but i got there in the end...
I wouldn't push it though, and I am sure either way - you are super encouraging.... They are such beautiful little things whilst young doing ballet.

I wouldnt think the teacher would be too hard on her just yet? I used to teach a class that age, and 90% of them were still doing the hop step. Is her ballet teacher nice?

I can assure you she will get it eventually. The more she practices, it will really just click overnight.

Thank you all luffly ladies for replying I can't believe I was stressed about skipping, I have to admit it is pretty ridiculous

I have since found out dd is the youngest in the class so that probably explains her lack of skipping skills compared to the other girls. She had her exam the other day and I think she did fine. It wasn't a real one just a mock one to get them used to doing the exams. She had the best hair so at least I am good at something

I actually got her to lead with her left leg as she was dragging that one along and she really improved with the skipping.

JM her ballet teacher is lovely, we went to a couple of other schools and the teachers were *ahem* a bit eccentric.

If you are good at doing hair, then you are already about ten steps ahead!

Thats really the only thing you need to know. It can be really stressful, but so rewarding as well. I hope your little girl does well in her exam!
