While there’s a lot of information on vitamins and minerals out there, the first ones to think about, as early as possible in your pregnancy or even beforehand, are folic acid and vitamin D. Taking supplements of folic acid, a B vitamin, have been shown to reduce the risk of spina bifida and other neural tube defects.

In the last few months of your pregnancy, precook and freeze as many meals (eg beef lasagne) as possible so that you have some nutritious food to eat once your baby is born. It’s important to eat well and drink plenty if you want to breastfeed.

Include sufficient iron-rich foods in your diet as many mothers are deficient in iron after the birth of their child and this could lead to anaemia, which will leave you feeling very run down and more prone to infection.

If you don’t already, plan your weekly menus… Read the rest

I was so excited to be pregnant, but at eight weeks hyperemesis (extreme nausea and vomiting) struck and I spent a lot of the first trimester getting intravenous hydration in hospital.
Eleni was born by caesarean section at 40 weeks. She was very unsettled on day three and my milk still had not come in. By the time I left hospital, breastfeeding was still not established and I felt quite nervous taking this delicate bundle home.
Feeding and settling issues continued. Newborns feed every 3-4 hours and so as things weren’t going smoothly, this meant I wasn’t getting much sleep. I was determined to give her my breastmilk but as she was not latching I was expressing milk when I should have been resting.
My Maternal and Child Health nurse had sent a counsellor around to check on me, but I was in complete denial. I just thought I was exhausted. I went to see the GP to seek help for Eleni’s feeding problems,… Read the rest
Then a child, right? For everyone but us.
Fertility treatment seemed mostly needles and schedules. I left my magazine’s Christmas party early to shoot up the crazy-making hormones on the dot; a year later I left my job altogether. I accepted that my body would not make any miracles.
Funny how much that power had meant to me; funny how easy it was to let it go. Crybaby, feather-mettle me had to get tough. Friends said to me they “couldn’t do IVF”. Inside I heard myself laugh and say, I couldn’t do it either, if there were any choice.
It’s hard to explain the grief. Always on my finger is a ring with a stone for each of my embryos who died. Before he was transferred into my uterus I saw … Read the rest

Welcome to possibly the most amazing and confronting adventure of your life.
The IVF journey can take you through some amazing feelings, emotions and ups and downs.
While the journey itself is filled with challenges, preparing to commence IVF can be daunting as well.
I went through IVF five times and I struggled a lot with what was happening to me. While my journey through IVF was ultimately successful, the process was long, wearing and both physically and emotionally painful at times.
Wishing to draw on my own IVF experiences to help others going through this challenging time, I have put together some advice for you that may help you to prepare yourself for the road ahead.
1. Support Having a strong support, someone who can be there with you through the tough times is something you are going to need to get you through this. For me, this was my husband. Being able to openly talk about your wants, … Read the rest

Tall dark and handsome, sometimes smooth and sweet or strong and nasty!
You’ve been there every morning, every afternoon, and even a sneaky one after dinner on occasion! But now you have become bitter and twisted, you don’t give me the buzz you once did (oh, who am I kidding, I crave that buzz right now!).
So long black delicious coffee!
I’m swapping you for something sweeter, fruitier, buzzier (maybe?), messier? (yes!) but that’s just my obsessive cleaning gene talking, and we’ll need something a lot stronger to go into that!
I’m swapping you for something raw! ROAR!!
I’m not normally one for fad diets or going all grainy and organic, but I do eat healthy food and love cooking! So when I read about having a predominantly raw diet I was intrigued.
This is my second day on the 28-day raw food program and it’s becoming interesting and well….… Read the rest

When news broke this week that Angelina Jolie had undergone a preventative double mastectomy after discovering she had the BRCA1 gene (a “faulty” gene that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer), my mind went back to the day I found out I carried the same gene fault.
It also made me realise I had something in common with Angelina Jolie, the most beautiful woman in the world.
Angelina has a family history of breast and ovarian cancer, with her mother passing away from the disease at just 56. The star also found she had the BRCA1 gene fault, which predisposes her to breast and ovarian cancer. The combination of both family history and faulty genetics, gave Angelina an 87% chance of breast and 50% chance of ovarian cancer. With this she decided to go forward with the brave decision to have the preventative double mastectomy that reduced her chance of breast cancer to just 5%.
Nope, me either. Yet, here I am on stage, with a gang of other authors and illustrators, waiting for my turn to make a hall full of teenagers laugh.
I don’t remember this being in the job description when I signed my first book deal.
The nerves in the back of my neck are tingling as I’m handed the microphone. I open my mouth, and to my great relief – out comes a vaguely coherent stream of anecdotes that mostly hit the mark.
I tell the audience about the time I was almost kidnapped by an orangutan in Borneo. Then there was the day I was bullied by a sea snake on the Great Barrier Reef, and who could forget the time I was mauled by a garfish at Port Douglas. OK, the last one isn’t a very funny story – but it proves that the truth is stranger than fiction and real life is a great place to start a work of fiction.
By the time I get through my brief presentation on me – I’m… Read the rest
These cupcakes work every time! Super light and fluffy, you can whip up a batch in no time for parties, school tuckshop, lunchboxes or just as a treat.
The trick is to weigh the eggs and then use exactly that weight of butter, sugar and flour in your recipe. Cupcake recipes are always so precise with the amount of butter and flour you should use, but eggs are always different sizes. This method ensures that your mixture is always the right consistency and it’s super-easy to change the recipe to suit the number of cupcakes you want to make!

The Government is set to abolish the baby bonus as of March 1, 2014, under the 2013 budget announced by Treasurer Wayne Swan tonight (May 14).
The payment will be replaced by a $2000 increase in Family Tax A following the birth of a first child. Second and subsequent children will trigger a $1000 increase. The increases will be paid in fortnightly installments.
The eligibility requirements for the baby bonus will change to be in line with Family Tax A. Currently a mother can earn up to $150,000 a year before she become ineligible for the baby bonus. Under the new scheme a mother must be eligible for Family Tax A to receive the payment – the cut-off for FTA is currently about $112,000 per household.
As news has come to hand tonight we are now of the understanding that these changes won’t come into effect until March 1, 2014, which means women who are currently pregnant will not be affected.… Read the rest
Yes, long gone are the days of lying on the soft white sand, listening to the waves crashing while I read a book. Now my “local beach” is a patch of concrete overlooking a 50m pool, or a corrugated iron fence. How times can change in only a matter of nine months. Oh, and I forgot to mention the pram by my side, with a sometimes-sleeping baby in it.
Let’s start from the beginning …
My husband and I were at our first hospital appointment when we both looked at each other and pretty much said at the same time: “Let’s have Chad out west”. We had planned to have our little mate surrounded by our family and friends and then make the trek west. However, we had a bad experience at the hospital, as well as with our doctor (I won’t go into … Read the rest

As Mother’s Day approaches I think about all the mothers that I have known who always seem to be so calm and serene.
I wish I had known then what I know now – that many of those mums were probably struggling just as I was – but none of us felt able to speak up. I wish I had known that becoming a new mum for many of us is likely to mean that we need more emotional support than at any other time in our lives.
I remember I really wanted to be like those mums, so calm and together, but instead I wondered about their inner world – why could I not see any evidence of the inner turmoil that was my constant companion since I became a mum?
I second guessed myself on everything, every decision was considered and re-considered before I tentatively followed through.
I never used to be like that, I had told myself I was going to be one of those mothers who seemed so self assured and solid in their decision making.

Keep your kids safe and warm with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s winter product safety tips.
Hot water bottles are a real hidden danger. In fact every year in NSW and Victoria around 35 people – young and old – are admitted to hospital with burns relating to hot water bottle accidents. Bursts, spills and splits are the main causes of injuries.
Hot water bottles must be replaced every two years as the rubber perishes from the inside out. Throughout winter check the bottle carefully for cracks and leaks and throw it out if it shows any signs of wear and tear.
Hot water bottles or wheat packs should never be given to babies or young children, as their skin is much too sensitive. For older kids use a bottle to warm their beds, but remove it before they climb under the covers. The pressure of leaning or lying on a hot water bottle can be enough to cause it to burst or leak.… Read the rest

I wouldn’t be a very good celebrity blogger if I didn’t discuss what is to be the hottest and most-waited-for celebrity baby this decade!
People like to say the royals are boring and generally won’t admit to being totally fascinated by them. But then came Kate … what a gorgeous girl and does she know how to totally rock maternity clothes! Mind you, I am sure if we had her money (and starting weight) we too would rock pregnancy!
Kate is due to give birth to her royal baby in July, pregnancy is proving this duchess well. Sticking to wardrobe staples like hats and coats, Kate shows how versatile key pieces can be over the course of nine months.
In saying that, she is 7 months pregnant and lives in a cold country so it is easy to cover up in coats and hat. For us in Australia it is not so easy. I had both my children in summer and at 7 months pregnant – although I was not by any means the ‘slimmest’… Read the rest
But there are some ways you CAN reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Read on to find out what they are …
Five ways you can reduce your risk of breast cancer
Breastfeed if you can. The longer you breastfeed the lower your risk of developing breast cancer.
Eat well. Eating a healthy diet and making sure you get your five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day will help to reduce your risk.
Cut back on alcohol. Researchers have found a strong link between alcohol and the risk of developing breast cancer. Limiting your drinking to just two standard drinks a day will reduce your risk.
Exercise regularly. Research has shown that regular exercise – even… Read the rest
In fact, since we began to help spread the word about the Love Your Sister campaign there have been quite a few things I’ve learned about this terrible disease.
Here are just a few of them.

11 things I didn’t know about breast cancer

Nine out of ten women who get breast cancer don’t have a family history of this disease.

On average, seven women die from breast cancer every day in Australia. Finding breast cancer early increases the chance of surviving the disease.

In 2009, the risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 85 in women was 1 in 8.1.

For 2008, Australia’s mortality rate for breast cancer in women, was estimated to be lower than the rates for Southern Africa, New Zealand, Western Africa, Northern Europe,… Read the rest

How do we get our kids to take responsibility for their things and get them to put their toys and clothes away, as opposed to stuffing them under the bed so you won’t find them?
I’m always amazed that an empty wardrobe with dozens of hangers isn’t as inviting as shoving the clothes in a corner or throwing them in the dirty clothes basket (even though they have never been worn), rather than hanging them up.
So how do we get them to help with the tidying and decluttering rather than shirking their responsibilities?
1. Praise, praise, praise! Kids can never get enough praise for a job well done. Studies have shown that giving someone acknowledgement for their work will keep them motivated to do well. This has been proven to be more effective for productivity than a cash incentive!
So always take a look at the bed they made, the clothes they put on the hangers, and the shoes they placed in the cupboard.… Read the rest
Connie is a 35-year-old mum to two beautiful boys. Her brother Samuel is an Australian actor with a famous face and an instantly recognisable voice.
Connie has breast cancer and it’s terminal. Samuel has a promise to keep and a record to break. Together they are spreading the message of breast cancer awareness and raising funds for breast cancer research.
So how exactly are they doing it?

What is Love Your Sister?
Samuel is riding a unicycle around Australia. He is attempting to break the World Record for the longest unicyle journey. The record is 14,686.82km and Sam’s goal is 15,000km! He is currently about to hit 5000km, so there’s a little while to go yet.
He’s aiming to raise $1million on the way too.
Sam left Melbourne on February 15 and headed through South Australia and the Northern Territory. He’s just crossed… Read the rest

As a measles epidemic grips south Wales, Associate Professor Paul Middleton is warning Australians that the same thing could happen here.
The number of measles cases has passed the 1000 mark in the Swansea region in Wales and the 10-18 age group has been the hardest hit. This group would have been eligible for the MMR jab when concerns about the link between the vaccination and autism were raised in the late 1990s in a paper by now-discredited doctor Andrew Wakefield.
We chat to emergency medicine specialist Associate Professor Paul Middleton about the measles outbreak in Wales and the long-term consequences of the drop in vaccination rates in Australia.

Q: What are the circumstances that led to the measles outbreak in Wales? Could this happen in Australia?
The measles outbreak in Wales is the result of a drop in vaccination numbers in the 1990s. Vaccination took a beating in 1990s,… Read the rest
There’s the ‘baby’ moments such as baby’s first smile, their first word and their first steps.
Then there are the first ‘mum’ moments – like the first time you feel like a real mum, or grosser moments such as the first time you use your fingers to pick your baby’s nose. Those two were one and the same for me by the way.
Anyway here are my top 5 favourite mum moments (so far) …
1. The after birth moment
Wait … that sounds like I really liked the placenta. Not that I didn’t like the placenta… I’ve no strong feeling about it either way. I mean, thanks for feeding my unborn babies placenta but I really wish the midwife didn’t ask me if I wanted to look at you afterwards! You were pretty gross.
Now, where was I? I’m talking about that moment immediately after you … Read the rest

Loving hugs, kisses and appreciation are some of the best Mother’s Day presents.
But if you’re lucky enough to also receive a tangible gift, it can be handy to know your consumer rights … just in case your present isn’t perfect.
Your consumer rights are set out in the Australian Consumer Law – and they’re the same, no matter which state or territory you live in.
When you receive a gift, you have the same rights to a refund or return as the person who bought it for you. However, you must be able to prove where the gift was purchased from, by showing a receipt, credit card statement or other evidence.
If you want to return a gift simply because you don’t like it, a business doesn’t have to give you a refund or exchange – but if they have a policy to offer a refund, replacement or credit note when a customer changes their mind, they must abide by this policy. (When shopping, always ask… Read the rest
Disturbingly graphic images – of gravely injured people – have flooded social networking sites. Unwittingly I’ve browsed Facebook and seen bloodied, legless people with jagged bone fragments jutting from what once were marathon runners exhausted legs.
The victims’ identities aren’t protected. Their faces contorted in screams are forever imprinted on social media, and on my brain. None of these people have been in a position to approve the use of their face (nor what’s left of their body).
I didn’t go looking. I was just reading up on social networking feeds.
But I did want to follow the events as they dramatically unfolded. Twitter, Facebook, other news aggregators have told story upon story upon story.
In days long gone, the average person would hear about news via the evening television broadcast and perhaps hourly… Read the rest
It was painted by my talented mother and to this day I still feel guilty when I recall the day I asked her to take it down. I was 10 years old (going on 16) and I’d decided that I was “too grown up” for Bambi. For shame.
Of course, I realise now that you’re never too old for Bambi and I’ve also found the perfect Mother’s Day gift for Mum – something that will hopefully remind her that I wasn’t a brat for TOO long. Sorry Mum …
Disney has teamed up with Australian fashion designer Arabella Ramsay to create a gorgeous limited-edition sleepwear collection for Mother’s Day – inspired by my friend, the classic Disney character Bambi. The Bambi sleepwear collection is available exclusively… Read the rest
It was early 2007, and our normally happy and cheeky little girl, was not herself. After countless doctors’ appointments with varied diagnosis, I founded a new doctor and refused to leave without an answer. After a lot of questions, a feel of her tummy and an emergency ultrasound, we found ourselves that night on the ‘kid’s oncology’ ward at our local children’s hospital.
What followed was a barrage of tests and then we were lead to a ‘quiet’ room and told the unthinkable “Your daughter has an aggressive childhood cancer and she must begin treatment immediately to survive”.
Heartbroken yet determined together with Imogen over the next three years we rode the childhood cancer ride. Though the… Read the rest
