You have to love Liz Cambage and Lauren Jackson (to name but 2 of the Opals). They are strong, intelligent, independent women with opinions that they are happy to express. And with these qualities and their high profiles, they represent great female role models for our kids, both boys and girls.
Take Lauren Jackson and her genuine surprise and obvious reverence at being selected to carry the Australian flag at the opening ceremony - there was no arrogance, no expectation, no tantrums, no embarressing behaviour. Just genuine happiness at the honour.
Take Liz Cambage and her 'slam dunk', her enthusiasm for promoting the game of basketball to all Australian kids and her tweeting ().
All of my kids play basketball and I was pleasantly surprised that my boys were equally excited at watching the Opals play as the Boomers - they knew the players, they knew their signature moves and there is absolutely no mention about 'boys being better'.
Love it.
