Film Review: The Dark Knight Rises
Judging from reviews already circulating, critics seem to like The Dark Knight Rises more than the general public, which must surely be a first for a comic-book adaptation. For me, The Dark Knight Rises is a great big film with great big problems. Some qualities of the film are breath-taking, while others are confusing and a little puerile.
In my full review (which is entirely free of spoilers!), I've tried to present a balanced reflection on the good bits and the not-so-good bits, to help map out the watchability of the film. That said, you're probably going to go and see it anyway (and why not? It's Batman!) so my biggest piece of advice is to take earplugs, or choose a quieter cinema. The audio is so loud that it is painful; my ears felt like they were going to bleed.
As for age appropriateness, the rating is M, which means it is up to you as a parent to judge whether you want your children to see it. Violence is present in the film, but it is not as deep and dark as previous Batman films. Personally, I think my 6-year-old wouldn't enjoy it (too long, too loud, and too confusing), but my 9-year-old nephew would probably love it. His mother, on the other hand...
