Film Review: Margaret
Margaret has been receiving rave reviews overseas (it opens in Australia tomorrow), and in many ways I can understand why. But despite the extremely commendable qualities of the film, there are problems too, not least the fact that the subject matter makes such uncomfortable viewing that the audience appeal is frightfully limited. I guess for any parent, watching a teenage girl stumble her way through post-traumatic stress syndrome, lose her virginity, experiment sexually, and rebel awkwardly against her somewhat-absent mother, this film is a little confronting. Part of you wants to grab the main character Lisa (Anna Paquin) and steal her (lovingly) away from her situation, while another part of you wants to get as far away from her behaviour as possible, in case her miscreant nature rubs off on you or your children. Some critics have dubbed Margaret a masterpiece, but here's what I have to say about it here
The film is rated MA15+ with drug, sex references and violence. Don't even think about taking the kids to this one!
