Film Review: Anton Chekhov's The Duel
Playing in limited release in cinemas around the country at the moment is Anton Chekhov's The Duel, a beautifully told adaptation of Chekhov's 1891 classic novella. If you're a fan of Russian literature, then you will certainly adore this film, which captures the feel of the book with perfection. But don't worry if you haven't read the book, or if you are intimidated by the complex reputation of Russian narrative, The Duel is an excellent introduction to the genre, especially in how the tale unravels with slow, calculated tension. If that isn't enough to interest you then see it for the costumes, which are absolutely exquisite.
